Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute (SPII) is a non-profit think tank, based in Johannesburg, committed to advancing the Constitution and to supporting the eradication of poverty and inequality through empirical research and advocacy.

 

 

Job Title: Budget Advocacy Research Intern
Location: Johannesburg.
Employment Type: Full-time  for a period of 3 months (End May 2020), with a potential to extend, under certain terms and conditions.
Start Date: March 2020

The purpose of thios position will be to work across a number of our key programmes, but particularly within our Building Better Budgeting/ Budgeting for Change project, doing budget analysis and budget advocacy work for better health systems and health access at the community level.

Requirements:

  • Commitment to the values of SPII and a passion for social justice
  • A degree in human rights, economics, or a related field
  • Candidates with experience and/or an interest in budget analysis and advocacy work for socio-economic rights are particularly encouraged to apply
  • Work experience in one the above fields, or a related field, with good references, is an advantage
  • Experience in working with budget analysis of National/Provincial/Local budgets is an advantage
  • An interest in the role of the Constitution in the South African democracy, particularly in relation to socio-economic rights and health entitlements is an advantage
  • Motivation to work independently and as a member of a small team
  • A demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, to use initiative and to take a proactive approach to work
  • A dedication to learning immersion and actively picking up new skills and knowledge on-the-job
  • The ability to work in both an academic/research context, as well as an applied, on-the-ground advocacy context
  • The ability to contribute to training development, delivery and logistics
  • Good communication skills and confidence to speak in public and with stakeholders
  • Good English writing skills are essential. The ability to communicate in at least one other South African language is an advantage

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Director and/or Researcher/s to assist with the implementation of SPII’s work on supporting community engagements with budget advocacy in South Africa
  • Assist with the implementation of budget training and budget advocacy work for civil society organisations (CSOs) and/or communities
  • Undertake primary and secondary research and assist with project implementation, as required
  • Work closely with the Director and/or Researcher/s to support the socio-economic rights work already undertaken by SPII
  • Engage in media and publicity work for SPII, as required
  • Engage in research writing, as necessary
  • Assist with the development of funding proposals and with compiling project reports, as requested
  • Engage in networking and the profile raising of SPII by participating in relevant workshops, conferences and stakeholder meetings
  • Provide ad hoc assistance to the general work of SPII, as required
