Job Title: Drill & Blast Manager

Specification
Purpose of Role
The role is responsible for ensuring management of blasting optimization from drilling and blasting to execution of design, thus ensuring optimally fragmented material for the process plant as well as waste material to ensure that the Production Manager’s function are delivered to the required quality and standards, sustainable and optimal use of mining resources to ensure business continuity. The role is responsible for managing and controlling the explosive magazine and explosives on site.

Role Context
Reports to the Production Manager, Managing blasting and drilling section so that planned volumes are achieved safely and cost effectively; Achieving production targets through quality blasts and drills; Ensure that explosives and drilling equipment is operated effectively and safely, Follow budgeting guidelines and bring about necessary changes to curb costs; Conform to government guidelines in terms of safety by continuously updating blasting procedures; Design, analyse, and monitor drilling reports in order to give feedback to the team to improve performance; Coordinate with technical department for blast designs in order to reduce ore contamination; Ensure accuracy and completion of reports before submission to DMR;
Analysing blasts and submit blast reports; Participate with other technical and engineering sections to set production goals; Manage and control the explosives magazine; Ensure compliance to the explosives Act.

Core work outputs:

Develop and execute short and intermediate term strategies that support the growth of the operation;
Ensure that explosives are available at all times; Maintain quality drilled holes and presplits; Continuous feeding of reef to the crushers and meet plant throughput; Coordinate with rock engineering specialist to assess drilling areas for faults, dykes and fissures that may result with unsafe drilling condition; Design drilling and blasting blocks, Make sure that fragmentations are as per the required specifications;
High wall control in line with Geotechnical expectations, Coordinate with explosives material suppliers and blasting contractor, Assist Blasters, drilling and production personnel to execute their work safely and cost-effectively; Coordinate with rock engineering specialist to assess drilling areas in line with structural variations; Prepare and summarize progress reports for management Track and guide work and performance of drilling and blasting team and peer mining groups; Support, lead and supervise blasting and drilling personnel and recommend, execute and optimization technologies; Create and maintain good and healthy relationship with employees and contractors.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
Grade 12/ NQF Level 4, Blasting Engineering qualifications with emphasis on open pit. A mining degree/Diploma will be an advantage, Open cast Blasting ticket, Minimum of 3 years mining experience in open cast mining as a Blasting Engineer/Technician, Must able to adapt and work effectively in a multi-disciple environment.
