The AIDS Foundation of South Africa (AFSA) wishes to appoint suitably qualified individual to serve as the Senior Program Specialist: Advocacy. The Senior Program Specialist: Advocacy position will support the implementation of the program through the Sex Rights Africa Network (SRAN).

SRAN is a regional networking hub to share evidence and strengthen action to realise sexual and reproductive health rights 9SRHR) or all in Southern Africa and globally.

 

 

Job Title: Senior Program Specialist – Research and Advocacy
Location: South Africa

Advocacy coordination is a critical component of the network. This position is available in Durban based at the organization’s head.  Applicants must have the ability to work in a demanding and high pressured environment and be able to travel as per job requirements.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Design and manage the advocacy component of AFSA’s sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) regional programming  

  • Develop clear advocacy goals and targets for the SRHR programme
  • Identify national and regional advocacy audiences and partners for the goals and targets
  • Prepare an advocacy campaign strategy to achieve the goals and targets
  • Lead the development of advocacy campaigns
  • Manage the implementation of the campaigns
  • Monitor and report on progress towards the advocacy goals
  • Coordinate research activities to generate evidence to support advocacy

2. Develop and implement an organisational advocacy strategy for AFSA

  • In consultation with the SRHR team, programme partners and SRAN Network members, identify advocacy goals and targets for the organisation
    • Identify advocacy audiences and partners for the goals and targets
    • Prepare an advocacy campaign strategy to achieve the goals and targets
    • Lead the development of advocacy campaigns
    • Manage the implementation of the campaigns
  • Monitor and report on progress towards the advocacy goals
  • Ensure alignment of programmatic and organisational advocacy activities

Requirements:

Qualifications and experience :

  • Education and experience:
  • Post graduate degree plus at least five years of related experience preferred. Masters degree ideal.
  • Knowledge and understanding:
  • Broad knowledge of SRHR issues and trends across the field, understanding of how research informs advocacy.
  • Strong written/oral communication skills:
  • Prior demonstrated research and report
  • Generation from which action, policy or system change was an outcome;
  • Gxperience in implementing a multi-country project,
  • Comfortable with public speaking and meeting facilitation; and ability to write impeccably in a variety of styles.
  • Excellent administrative and project management skills, particularly in an environment with competing demands and overlapping projects: ability to work independently, take initiative, establish and accomplish priorities when faced with multiple tasks, work with and without deadlines, pay close attention to details and logistics.
  • Interpersonal skills:
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide array of constituencies and personalities, commitment and flexibility at all times.
  • Advanced computer skills – MS Office, as well as common web 2.0 tools.
  • Strong work ethic and work history that would evidence commitment to AFSA’s mission.
  • Genuine passion for SRHR and related issues.
