The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is a nonprofit organisation that works to conserving threatened species and ecosystems in southern Africa to the benefit of all people.

Job Title: Conservation Canine Project Coordinator 

Job Location: Johannesburg

The purpose of the position is to Coordinate in its Wildlife in Trade Programme. Illegal and/or unsustainable wildlife trade is one of the most significant global threats to biodiversity . Wildlife trade is escalating in southern Africa and the mission of the Wildlife in Trade Programme is to curb the impacts of illegal and/or unsustainable wildlife trade through targeted interventions along the trade chain. One such intervention is our Conservation Canine Project, which works to prevent and detect wildlife crimes.

Responsibilities:

  • Day to day coordination and implementation of the Conservation Canine Project
  • Ongoing strategic development of the Conservation Canine Project, including developing new areas of work and unlocking opportunities
  • Provide training, assessing and moderating the Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASETHA) NQF DH (Dog Handling) one to six training course
  • Provide training and refresher training to the EWT Conservation Canines
  • Ensure that all EWT Conservation Canines and EWT handlers are annually accredited and evaluated
  • Facilitate the integration of the use of EWT Conservation Canines into operations at appropriate locations where they will be effective in the fight against wildlife crime
  • Ensure the financial sustainability of the Conservation Canine Project (this includes fundraising, engagement with donors, ensuring all donor commitments are met and ensuring financial security of all the EWT Conservation Canines for their full estimated lifespan)
  • Develop and nurture new partnerships and relationships with donors, governmental agencies and private sector companies for the benefit of Wildlife in Trade Programme and the EWT at large
  • Maintain and service existing partnerships and relationships with donors, governmental agencies and private sector companies for the benefit of WITP and the EWT at large

Requirements:

  • Certified as dog handler and completed the SASETHA NQF DH one to six course
  • Qualified as an assessor through SASETHA
  • Private Security Industry Regulation Authority (PSIRA) registration would be beneficial
  • Extensive track record of training working canines and experience training canine handlers and in managing canine units
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of role-players, including intergovernmental agencies, government officials (including those with an environmental and law enforcement mandate), NGOs, the private sector, communities, staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability in conceiving and developing new areas of work
  • Demonstrated management abilities, formal management training would be beneficial
  • Self-motivation and pro-activity, administrative skills, organisational skills, and the proven ability to work under pressure
  • Report-writing skills for a variety of audiences
  • A passion for conservation and our natural heritage
  • Ethical and compassionate attitude to working with animals
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programmes
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong project coordination and people management skills
  • Experience in and ability to speak publicly
  • Self-motivation and pro-activity.
  • Administrative skills and good organisation skills
  • Knowledge of a second South African language would be beneficial
  • Valid SA driver’s license, and suitable off road and long distance driving experience
  • Disciplined, innovative and energetic
  • Staff management skills
  • Communication and networking skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of team
  • Strong people skills and an approachable manner
