The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is a nonprofit organisation that works to conserve threatened species and ecosystems in southern Africa to the benefit of all people.
Job Title: Ingula Nature Reserve Intern
Job Location: Ladysmith / Van Reenen, KwaZulu-Natal.
Report to: Project Manager and Programme Manager
Responsibilities:
- Assist Ingula Reserve management with the daily running of the nature reserve:
- Undertake regular fence patrols and management
- Water management
- Road maintenance
- Alien vegetation clearing
- Erosion control
- Vehicle and tool maintenance
- Firefighting or any other applicable tasks required by the reserve management team
- Aid in the execution of Environmental Management Plans as required
- Carry out community capacity building activities in the region surrounding the reserve
- Periodic road mortality counts and power line surveys to be carried out
- Be on site five days a week for a period of eight hours per day
- Work outdoors all day (unless extreme weather prevails)
Requirements:
- Tertiary qualification in nature conservation, zoology, ecology or similar
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Experience in working with communities would be favourable
- Oral and written communication skills and being conversant in English, with isiZulu being advantages
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of programmes
- Possession of a valid South African or international driver’s license, and suitable driving experience
- Ability to undertake tasks that are physically demanding
- Energetic, innovative thinking
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Self-motivated, disciplined and driven with strong people skills and an approachable manner
