The EELC is a public interest law clinic established in 2012. They are a team of 15 lawyers, researchers and community engagement officers working to advance the struggle for quality and equality in education, through legal research, advocacy and strategic litigation. The EELC works closely with, Equal Education, a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members.
Job Title: Executive Director
Location: Western Cape
The purpose of this position is to head the organisation’s leadership team.
- We are looking for a leader with a demonstrated commitment and passion for social justice. Key responsibilities of the Executive Director, supported by the Deputy Director, include:
- Develop and implement the EELC’s strategic vision, including developing strategic and innovative legal interventions in line with the EELC’s core mandate.
- Manage and lead the EELC team, including supervising and mentoring attorneys and researchers.
- Maintain the healthy financial management of the organisation, including fundraising and funder management and reporting.
- Build and maintain relationships with strategic partners of the EELC including, social movements, community partners and funders.
- Represent the EELC in various forums, including engagements with the media, government, the private sector, civil society, and funding partners.
- Ensure consistent monitoring and evaluation of the EELC’s work, strategies and impact
- Guide the development of the organisational culture and ethos of the EELC to reflect the values of justice and equity for which we advocate.
- An LLB degree. An LLM degree in a human rights / public law / education related field will be an advantage.
- Admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa with at least five to seven years’ post-admission working experience in litigation.
- Experience in, or familiarity with, education and/or children’s rights is a distinct advantage.
- A demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice.
- A record of leadership abilities, including:
- Experience relating to financial and funder management.
- Experience in managing projects from conceptualisation through to close off
- Strong human resource management skills
- The ability to build the internal capacity of the team and provide support in a collegial environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (fluency in other South African languages will be an advantage).
- Residing in or willing to relocate to Cape Town.
