The Homestead Projects for Street Children, based in Cape Town, successfully transitions neglected and traumatised children away from the street, back home or on to successful independent living through a holistic set of prevention, outreach, stabilisation, residential care, and family reunification and youth transition programmes. The Homestead Shelter accommodates 85 boys, aged 7 to 17.

 

Job Title: Shelter Social Worker
Location: Khayelitsha, Cape Town

Report to: The Shelter Manager

Remuneration: R16 000 per month + Provident Fund

The purpose of the position is to help ensure that this centre continues to provide a high quality stabilisation service to children who exhibit behavioural, substance abuse, emotional and developmental challenges relating to chronic and deliberate neglect, physical and mental abuse, exploitation and life on the street.

Requirements:

  • Computer skills with the ability to effectively develop and maintain Excel, database and cloud monitoring and evaluation systems, as well as social media profiles
  • An understanding of the challenges facing Child and Youth Care Centres and the need to develop these centres into professional service providers
  • A proven ability to develop and run structured therapeutic, recreation and developmental programmes
  • Proven ability to work with senior management as well as community leaders and stakeholders from various sectors
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in social work, current SACSSP registration and a valid driver’s license (learners licence will not be considered)
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant experience
  • Driven individual, one with high energy levels
  • A child centred self-starter and a systems-focused team player who is willing to roll up their sleeves and to assist with every aspect of the children’s care and development
  • Be willing to go the extra mile, work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to develop and maintain therapeutic, as well as developmental and education opportunities for the children
