The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) was founded in 2000, in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and with the purpose of building of fair, democratic and inclusive societies in Africa. IRJ is an independent organisation located at the interface between civil society and academia.

Job Title: Programme Manager (to head the Sustained Dialogues Programme)
Job Location: Cape Town
Reports to: Executive Director

The purpose of the Programme Manager is to drive the strategic direction of the programme with input from the Project Leaders and guidance of the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of Project Leaders and will be responsible for ensuring that programme deliverables are clearly defined, achieved and regularly reviewed
  • Form part of the Senior Management Team and will actively participate in strategic and operational decision-making for the organisation

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Development, Psychology, Politics or related fields
  • Five to eight’ years working experience in their field of expertise
  • Working knowledge of current affairs both locally and globally;
  • Knowledge of key political, social and economic trends in Southern Africa
  • Knowledge and experience in Community Reconciliation work and Transitional Justice
  • Experience working at community level
  • In-depth knowledge about South Africa’s history and current national political and societal issues and debates
  • Minimum of two South African official languages
  • Proven ability to develop a budget based on the programme strategy and actively manage reporting and expenditure;
  • Can manage complexity, and think strategically;
  • Proven ability to manage a project from inception to delivery; including working with budgets, managing dependencies and taking responsibility for project success;
  • Able to drive to project planning and strategic direction of the unit and actively involve the entire team.
  • Proven ability to manage the performance and development of a small team.

  • Written or published articles/papers or developed programmes

  • Good writing skills in English and another SA language;
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to prioritize work and manage deadlines
  • Innovative and creative, able to see new opportunities
  • Planning and time management – meets deadlines
  • Reflective and open to learning
  • High level of Emotional Intelligence
  • Drivers licence
  • Fluent in a South African language other than home language
  • Willingness to travel when required
