The International Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally affected by HIV and AIDS (INERELA+) was founded in 2002 by a group of religious leaders living with or personally affected by HIV and AIDS. The network was formed and formally named African Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV or AIDS (ANERELA+). The main aim was to help these leaders to live openly so that they can become agents of change by breaking the six evils: Stigma, Shame, Discrimination, Denial, Inaction and Misaction (SSDDIM).

The official registration took place in March of 2004 in South Africa. In 2008 the network changed its name to INERELA+ because of the geographical spread of its membership in other continents. Currently INERELA+ has 15 networks across Africa, and representations in Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America, with a global membership of approximately 8158. The network’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it is able to challenge the societal injustices, religious norms and gaps which put people at risk of contracting HIV.

The INERELA+ Secretariat, based in Johannesburg South Africa, provides co-ordination and technical support to all the country networks. The country networks are constituted and managed by ordained and lay religious leaders who are living with or personally affected by HIV & AIDS. Thus, the national networks are able to use their presence and social capital in communities to advocate for effective HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. The Country Networks are the implementing arm of INERELA+.



Job Title: Projects and Communications Officer
Location: South Africa


The opportunity is available for a suitably qualified and experienced Projects and Communications
Officer to join the INERELA+ team based in Fontainebleau, Randburg.


Programmes Manager


  • Perform project management and support activities which contribute to the development andsuccessful delivery of a range of projects implemented through Country Networks in line with established objectives.
  • Contribute to program and organisational reporting.
  • Facilitate sharing of best practice and lessons learnt with external stakeholders as appropriate as possible.
  • Developing and providing reference materials and quality information across the programme.


The Projects and Communication Officer will perform the following functions:

  • Work with Program Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Officer to produce routine and ad-hoc reports

Including but not limited to:

  • Periodic substantive reports for INERELA+ against donor requirements, projects and activities, annual reports, newsletters and any other relevant.
  • Reports required by the Programmes Manager.
  • Coordinate the Programme team’s efforts in resource mobilization and participate in building and maintaining country networks, contacts among the donor community, and keeping abreast of evolving trends within countries where country networks are based.
  • Engage actively in public information initiatives and maintain close working relationships with Country Networks on public information and social media activities.
  • Coordinate all Programme public information activities, including events and publications to ensure coherence, consistency and accuracy of all forms of communication.
  • Oversee the collection and online archiving of all reports produced within Programmes.
  • Communicate with Country Networks and team members on project status, including progress, risk and any issues that may have an impact on project delivery.
  • Support development and implementation of communication and visibility activities to facilitate better understanding among Country Networks and stakeholders about the.
  • Draft and develop internal and external communication materials including brochures, flyers, fact sheets, news alerts, speeches, slide presentations, articles for the website, events  etc.
  • Draft and edit human interest stories for external communications and internal/external reports.
  • Represent INERELA+ externally at conferences, meetings and other events.
  • Attend inter-agency meetings and assist on any programme issues.
  • Identify opportunities for leveraging the use of IT to enhance Programme operations and efficiency and to facilitate knowledge management, and information sharing.
  • Development and introduction of innovation to ensure INERELA+ is continually incorporating best practice approaches into programme support services.
  • Disseminate and share of best practices and lessons learned for knowledge building.
  • Provide programme information to Country Networks.
  • Create and manage a secure data and information repository which safely keeps and avails, as may be required, all key organisational documents.
  • Manage all internal and external communication tools including the website, social media and IEC materials.
  • Perform any other duties as requested and tasked by the Programmes Manager.
  • Managing work plans and calendars and dealing with conflicting demands on time, using initiative to prioritise activities.
  • Facilitate at SAVE trainings and other related trainings
  • Undertake project technical visits as directed the Programmes Manager.



External: Coordination with Country Networks, religious bodies, institutional and other donors, NGO forums, civil society, UN agencies, consultants, service providers.

Internal: The position is line managed by the Programme Manager. In the areas of responsibility, the role holder develops relationships with Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Officer, Advocacy Officer and Finance and Administration.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Superb written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adapt communications for different audiences and especially those with English as a second language.

  • Excellent IT skills including ability to comfortably work with all major MS office programmes such as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and databases
  • Proven experience of being able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with high quality results.
  • Demonstrated experience of working across different media formats.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise multiple tasks, projects and assignments.
  • Promoting the application of learning to improve program quality and to strengthen INERELA+ influence among external stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work independently, at the direction of others, and in a team-focused environment.
  • Initiative and judgment needs to be applied regularly in the course of day-to-day work.
  • Expected to make direct contribution to improved performance, whether through own area of work or participation in cross-disciplinary projects.
  • Solutions-orientated with a demonstrated ability to proactively identify and solve problems.
  • Experience working with faith based networks in Africa.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and an understanding of French and Portuguese will be an added advantage.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities and work independently as well as being a part of a team.



  • Minimum university degree (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) in business administration, project management, social sciences, development communication, international relations, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and articulate program reports and communications materials with minimal oversight and editing.
  • At-least 3 years of experience in communication, donor reporting, documentation publication in relation to INGOs/humanitarian sector.
  • Previous experience with donor reporting and communications preferred.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of best practices in learning.
  • Significant experience of working with Country Networks including FBOs
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and strong IT skills
  • Experience in implementing communications strategies is required.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, Outlook etc.), and good knowledge of MS publisher and spreadsheets is desirable;
  • Able and willing to travel occasionally within and out of South Africa.
  • Prior regional experience in Africa would be considered an asset.


  • Understanding of partnership approach to international development.
  • Experience of facilitation, training, networking and partner capacity building.
  • Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability.
