The Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education has been established to strengthen the theoretical, strategic, organisational, creative and analytic capabilities of worker, student and community activists struggling against racism, sexism, poverty and inequality.

The Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education wishes to attract candidates for a part-time Film activist residency at the Centre.

Job Title: Film Activist-in-Residence
Job Location: Cape Town
Duration: Three month period

The intention of the residency is to expand our activist film work by linking up with a film director, producer, critic, and/or lover of film, and shaping a programme to make use of film in social justice mobilisation and education.

The purpose of the residency is to provide a space for a film activist to draw up a programme of films from different genres which will be of interest to activists. The incumbent will be expected to programme ways in which films can be seen as part of ongoing education and mobilisation, by for example, structuring ways for audiences to engage with the issues that a film raises. Tshisimani has a 60-seat dedicated auditorium which can be used for film showings, discussions etc. In addition to the development of a film programme, there is also the opportunity for the film resident to teach activists about filmmaking (for example using cell phone cameras, and editing). We also expect the film activist in residence to attract to Tshisimani and its cinema/auditorium young, especially black filmmakers, as individuals, collectives and networks, as well as film societies centred on activism.

To apply, submit your CV, and a proposal for a set of films which you would select around a chosen theme, clearly indicating why these films have been selected, what sort of activist-audiences would be targeted, and ways you would engage activists through these films to [email protected]

The time commitment and remuneration is negotiable, on the basis of Tshisimani’s needs and the availability of the successful applicant.

The deadline for applications for the present residency is Friday 14th September 2018.
