Job Title: Technical Advisor TB
Project Name: USAID TB South Africa Project

Location: National Department of Health (Pretoria)

Project Overview:

The USAID TB South Africa Project is five-year contract which builds upon interventions and achievements from URC’s current USAID TB CARE II South Africa and the prior TB Program South Africa. TB CARE II activities are supporting the South Africa National Department of Health’s (NDOH) TB prevention and control efforts, working closely with national and provincial partners to close identified gap areas and further develop sustainable systems that can carry forward long-term improvements in TB and drug-resistant (DR) TB diagnosis, care, and treatment services.

This project will help the government of South Africa further reduce TB infections, with the ultimate goal of ending TB once and for all. To reach this goal the project will will continue to improve the long-term sustainability of effective TB response systems and improve TB care and treatment for vulnerable populations.

Roles and Responsibilities 

The Senior Technical Advisor – TB will provide technical assistance to the national TB and Control Management Programme. He/she will provide overall strategic and managerial leadership in the implementation of the finding missing TB patients project, in collaboration with all the major stakeholders. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide overall strategic leadership on the implementation of the missing TB patients initiatives, in collaboration with all the major stakeholders;
  • Develop innovative technical strategies for improving identification of missing TB cases;
  • Coordinate with NTP and provincial and district departments of health on the identification of missing project technical assistance needs required to achieve the expected outputs of the contract;
  • Coordinate and provide technical inputs on various aspects of the project including FAST, Contact Management, Targeted community screening and QA/QI and other NDOH initiatives;
  • Coordinating with NTP to determine all training, technical needs and identifying suitable opportunities to support components of the project;
  • Ensure that DOH technical and field staff prepare and update performance data on a regular basis
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual project activity reports
  • Functioning as the liaison between the NDOH and all stakeholders in the TB programme in South Africa
  • Support/ Drive the implementation of the project initiatives at NDOH.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • A post graduate qualification in a relevant discipline preferably Medicine or Public Health.
  • At least 5 years of experience, preferably in South Africa, in TB policy and technical skills;
  • A strong record of leading similar initiatives with the Department of Health in South Africa;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish productive relationships with senior government officials, the business community, civil society, and international donors; excellent written and oral communications skills;
  • Excellent English language, written and oral communications skills;
