REQUIREMENTS : Applicants must be in possession of a National diploma\/degree in Environmental
\nHealth and\/or Safety Management. A Safety, Health and Environment
\nManagement Training Course (SAMTRAC), Hazard Identification and\/or Risk<\/p>\n
Assessment certificate or equivalent completed Occupation Health and Safety
\n(OHS) Management course. Registration with an appropriate professional body
\n(the Health Professions Council of South Africa [HPCSA], the Southern African
\nInstitute for Occupational Hygiene [SAIOH], the Institute of Safety Management
\n[IOSM], etc.). Appropriate experience in OHS. Knowledge and understanding of
\nrelevant and related legislation pertaining to the Occupational Health and Safety
\nAct, 1993 (Act 85 of 1993) (OHS Act) and the relevant regulations. Knowledge
\nand understanding of relevant legislation of the Department of Labour, the
\nDepartment of Health, the Department of Environmental Affairs and the
\nDepartment of Water Affairs. Knowledge and understanding of the compilation of
\nsafety committees and contingency plans and evaluating of Injury on Duty (IOD)
\nin accordance to the relevant procedures. Excellent communication (verbal and
\nwritten), interpersonal relations and organising skills. Ability to work well under
\npressure independently. Computer skills in MS Office software. A valid driver\u2019s
\nlicence and the ability to drive long distances.<\/p>\n

DUTIES : The incumbent will be responsible to provide an efficient and high quality OHS
\nservice for the Departmental employees. Ensure compliance with safety
\nstandards, implement safety directives, improve safety performance and ensure
\nthat safety policies, guidelines and procedures are aligned with the relevant Acts
\nand Regulations. Ensure strategic and business planning to ensure that
\nworkplace safety committees and first aiders are in place and fully functional.
\nAssist managers and employees to promote a culture of OHS awareness (roles
\nand responsibilities). Implement OHS management practices to assist in
\ncompiling all OHS policies, guidelines, standards and systems. Identify measures
\nand control potential hazards and risks in the work environment pertaining to
\nhealth and safety and the environmental aspects within the broad context of
\npreventing injuries to diseases and degradation of the environment. Ensure all
\nbuildings, construction plants and machinery meet and maintain compliance
\ncertificates as regulated by the local Authorities and the OHS Act as well as other
\nrelevant regulations. Manage IODs and investigate all incidents and accidents to
\nemployees, clients and contractors as well as design tools to prevent future
\naccidents. Recognise injury and illness trends within the Department and
\nestablish remedial control measures to address the trends e.g. policies and
\ntraining strategies. Perform risk management and undertake risk assessments on
\nnew or changed plants, chemicals, facilities, etc. Assist in the development and
\nimplementation of action plans to address identified key risk areas. Conduct OHS
\nTraining and Awareness. Participate in designing and rolling-out Health and
\nSafety training programmes, orientation and local inductions. Ensure local OHS
\ninductions take place throughout the Department.<\/p>\n
