The\u00a0<\/span>Department of Correctional Services<\/b>\u00a0is a sub-<\/span>department\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/span>South African government. It is responsible for running South Africa’s\u00a0<\/span>prison\u00a0system. <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The department has about 34,000 staff and is responsible for the administration of 240 prisons, which accommodates about 189,748 inmates. The prisons include minimum, medium and maximum security facilities. <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Purpose<\/b>: Corrections provide needs-based correctional sentence plans and interventions that are based on an assessment of the security risk and criminal profile of individuals.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Corrections target all elements associated with offending behaviour and it focuses on the offence for which a person was sentenced to correctional supervision, remanded in a correctional centre or released on parole.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Objective<\/b>: Address the specific rehabilitation needs of persons who have been sentenced to correctional supervision and incarceration in a correctional centre or of persons who have been released on parole.<\/p>\n This is achieved through regular assessment and providing needs-based correctional programmes to address all the elements that are associated with offending behaviour.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Personal Corrections provide needs-based correctional sentence plans and interventions based on an assessment of the security risk and criminal profile of individuals, targeting all elements associated with offending behaviour.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It was combined with the Ministry of Justice in May 2013, to create the new Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services. The political head of the department is the\u00a0<\/span>Minister of Justice, currently Michael Masutha. The agency is headquartered in the West Block of the Poyntons Building in\u00a0<\/span>Pretoria.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
