REQUIREMENTS : Applicants must be in possession of a National Diploma or a B degree in Animal
\nHealth with Animal Diseases as a major subject (you are required to furnish a
\ncredit certificate and\/or statement of results). A dog training or dog handling
\ncertificate. Knowledge of canine motivation, dog psychology, behaviour patterns,
\nolfactory perceptions and abilities. Experience in and knowledge of the
\nAgricultural Pest Act, 1983 (Act 36 of 1983), the Animal Diseases Act, 1984 (Act
\n35 of 1984), the Meat Safety Act, 2000 (Act 40 of 2000), the Plant Improvement
\nAct, 1976 (Act 53 of 1976), the Genetically Modified Organisms Act, 1997 (Act 15
\nof 1997), the Agricultural Product Standards Act, 1990 (Act 119 of 1990), the
\nFertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, 1947
\n(Act 36 of 1947) and various relevant international guidelines and obligations. The
\nability to interpret regulatory information and standard operating procedures.
\nGood communication and analytical skills and the ability to work under pressure.
\nComputer literacy in MS Office software. Must also be prepared to travel and
\nwork away from home\/office on short notice, and work shifts at the ports as well
\nas irregular hours. A valid driver\u2019s licence and the ability to drive.<\/p>\n
DUTIES : The incumbents will be responsible to handle detector dogs for the examination of
\npassenger, baggage, cargo and international mail for regulated articles (in
\ncompliance with, inter alia, the various relevant international guidelines and
\nobligations). Interview passengers, inspect suspect\/suspicious baggage, cargo
\ntrucks, buses and other vehicles and take appropriate risk management actions
\nfor non-compliant regulated products. Work with other governmental departments
\nthat are also responsible for international travellers. Assist Agricultural Food and
\nQuarantine Technicians at secondary inspections when not conducting dog
\nhandling duties. Maintain and assist other dog handlers with canine health,
\nwellbeing and training. Perform demonstrations or public relations activities when
\nrequested. Supervise dog handler assistant(s). Represent the Department on
\nforums and at meetings.
