It was inspired by the Medill Justice Project in the USA that focused on the exoneration of wrongfully convicted persons.<\/p>\n<p>At WITS, the Project continues to use the power of Investigative journalism to cover miscarriages of justice whilst utilising the media environment to educate and raise <span id=\"IL_AD4\" class=\"IL_AD\">public<\/span> awareness on extensive and systemic problems in the <span id=\"IL_AD8\" class=\"IL_AD\">criminal justice system<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>From analysis of the <span id=\"IL_AD7\" class=\"IL_AD\">criminal justice process<\/span>, emerges Advocacy work in light of rights and conditions in prison, cognisant of the fact we are held accountable to our Constitution, International conventions, <span id=\"IL_AD6\" class=\"IL_AD\">covenants<\/span> and laws.<\/p>\n<p>We support inmates on various matters including, procedure, case <span id=\"IL_AD2\" class=\"IL_AD\">file<\/span> review as well as writing articles on their situation and reporting human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>As extended Public engagement we hope to reach diverse demographics and utilise art and <span id=\"IL_AD3\" class=\"IL_AD\">video<\/span> to increase knowledge of such issues.<\/p>\n<p>The Wits Justice Project seeks to appoint a\u00a0Journalism Intern to be\u00a0based in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>Opportunity closing date: Monday, 12 June, 2017<\/p>\n<p>Remuneration: Competitive <span id=\"IL_AD1\" class=\"IL_AD\">monthly<\/span> stipend.<\/p>\n<p>This is a six month contract with an option to renew once.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0 Responsibilities:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Produce regular social media including blogs, tweets, Facebook posts<\/li>\n<li>Investigate and research, identify and interview and produce journalist products<\/li>\n<li>Be willing to visit prisons, courts and police stations from time to time<\/li>\n<li>Be willing to interview inmates<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate and respond to correspondence from inmates<\/li>\n<li>Carry out various office administration tasks<\/li>\n<li>Be willing to assist with a variety of projects including organising events and seminars<\/li>\n<li>Work as a member of a small, hard-working, team which is passionate about human rights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A relevant degree from an accredited University<\/li>\n<li>A keen interest in human rights<\/li>\n<li>Proven ability to carry out journalistic research and investigations, and to be able to produce from that compelling media products<\/li>\n<li>Social Media and web site management experience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o apply, submit a <span id=\"IL_AD5\" class=\"IL_AD\">letter<\/span> of motivation and detailed CV to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:simoniah.mashangoane@wits.ac.za\"><b>simoniah.mashangoane@wits.ac.za.<\/b><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:simoniah.mashangoane@wits.ac.za\"><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a>The WJP reserves the right not to make an appointment and continue searching after the closing date.<\/p>\n<p>Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.<\/p>\n<p>Location: Johannesburg<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wits Justice Project (WJP) is housed in the Journalism Department in the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (WITS).
