The Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) in the HSRC undertakes basic, applied and comparative research devoted to the study of Africa development challenges and opportunities.
\nThe Institute\u2019s mission is to produce evidence-based knowledge from research which is needed to inform African public policy and practice, with special emphasis on sustainable development processes; good governance, human security, peace and security; and science, technology and innovation.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the Institute collaborates with other key players on the continent and provides research-based policy advice to African multilateral organisations and government departments on public affairs. The work of the Institute makes a direct contribution to addressing the many dimensions of the study of Africa by Africans and reversing the Continent\u2019s marginalization in the global knowledge economy.<\/p>\n
AISA seeks to appoint 1 PhD Interns from 1st January 2018. The internship experience is intensive and seeks mature individuals who are able to work independently as well as in a team.
\nThe appointed Intern will develop their research expertise by working closely with other experts and project specialists in the HSRC. If they are not yet already registered, the Interns will be required to enrol for their PhD Degree programme with a University in South Africa as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
Specification:<\/b>
\nIn addition to completing their degrees,
\n\u2022The PhD Interns will be required to actively contribute to the conceptualisation and implementation of other research projects in the Institute.
\n\u2022This will also include identification of relevant calls for proposals and contributing to the development of proposals for funding;
\n\u2022Collection and analysis of data;
\n\u2022Write-up of research reports and other outputs for publication and conference presentations;
\n\u2022As we as assisting with administrative duties in the Institute when requested do so.<\/p>\n
Key Requirements:<\/b>
\n\u2022Applicants for the PhD internship must have graduated with a Master\u2019s degree and be either already registered for a PhD or eligible to register within the first year of taking up the internship at AISA;
\n\u2022Candidates must have relevant qualifications and an interest in one or more of the following priority areas of academic study;<\/p>\n
\uf0fcSustainable Development in Africa
\n\uf0fcGovernance, Peace & Security in Africa<\/p>\n
\u2022Computer literacy including MS Office, Outlook and Excel and related applications is required;
\n\u2022Good planning and organisational skills, including working well under pressure;
\n\u2022Sound communication skills (verbal as well as report writing);
\n\u2022A sound conceptual grounding in the discipline and in qualitative and\/ quantitative research methods;
\n\u2022Sound modelling & simulation skills will be an added advantage.
