Provides Grants For South African University Graduates To Pursue A Master\u2019s Or Doctoral Degree At A United States University In Any Subject (Excludes Studies That Require Contact With Patients)<\/strong><\/p>\nThis world-renowned program offers scholarships that cover up to the full cost of tuition and living expenses in the United States for South African students interested in pursuing a Master\u2019s or Doctoral degree at any accredited institution in the United States.<\/p>\n
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government\u2019s flagship international educational exchange.<\/p>\n
It was established in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.<\/p>\n
It currently operates in South Africa and more than 150 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n
Applications close April 22, 2018, but applicants are encouraged to start the application process as soon as possible.\u00a0 Highly-motivated South African students wishing to pursue a Master\u2019s degree must have completed a four-year B-Tech degree or a three-year Bachelor\u2019s degree with an Honors degree.<\/p>\n
Prospective Doctoral students must have successfully obtained a Master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Mission is honored to partner with the National Research Foundation to co-fund Fulbright Fellows to complete Doctoral degrees in the United States.<\/p>\n
This supports the synergies between the National Development Plan and the South African Department of Higher Education\u2019s New Generation of Academics Program.<\/p>\n

In 1953, the first South African to participate in the Fulbright Program was Professor Stefans Grov\u00e9 from the University of Pretoria, who completed a Master\u2019s degree in musicology at Harvard.<\/p>\n
To date, more than 2,000 South Africans have received Fulbright scholarships to pursue degrees in the United States.<\/p>\n
South African Fulbright alumni come from diverse backgrounds, and include Professor Es\u2019kia Mphahlele, Dr. Yvonne Muthien, Dr. Sibusiso Sibisi, and Judge Mandisa Maya.<\/p>\n
The United States welcomes more than one million foreign students each year at more than 4500 institutions of higher education.\u00a0 South Africans interested in applying for the Fulbright Program can learn more by visiting the U.S. Embassy website<\/p>\n
