CALS is also a law clinic, registered with the Law Society of the Northern Provinces. As such, CALS connects the worlds of both academia and social justice. CALS\u2019 vision is a socially, economically and politically just society where repositories of power, including the state and the private sector, uphold human rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job Title:\u00a0Counsel and Senior Attorney<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Location:<\/strong> Johannesburg<br \/>\n<strong>Salary:<\/strong> \u00a0Commensurate with experience. CALS is a grant-funded institution and the level of remuneration is dependent on available funding.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct innovative strategic litigation on behalf of CALS\u2019 clients<\/li>\n<li>Provide training and support to attorneys and candidate attorneys on litigious matters<\/li>\n<li>Provide expert input into draft policies and legislation<\/li>\n<li>Participate in the evaluation of our work, strategies and impact<\/li>\n<li>Initiate and conduct test case litigation<\/li>\n<li>Provide training and support to junior attorneys with less litigation experience<\/li>\n<li>Supervise and contribute to the training and development of candidate attorneys and interns<\/li>\n<li>Engage with communities and individuals affected by human rights violations<\/li>\n<li>Engage with the media, including through interviews and writing opinion editorials<\/li>\n<li>Negotiate and engage with government, the private sector and regional and national institutions<\/li>\n<li>Provide expert input into draft policies and legislation<\/li>\n<li>Build relationships with colleague organisations<\/li>\n<li>Participate in the evaluation of our work, strategies and impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An LLB or equivalent qualification; an advanced degree in law will be an advantage<\/li>\n<li>Admission as an attorney is a non-negotiable requirement<\/li>\n<li>Minimum of seven to 10 years\u2019 experience\u00a0we are looking for someone with significant litigation experience and expertise, preferably in public interest litigation<\/li>\n<li>Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (fluency in other South African languages will be an advantage)<\/li>\n<li>Experience in, or familiarity with, one or more of CALS\u2019 areas of programmatic work, namely: Gender, Business and Human Rights,\u00a0Rule of Law,\u00a0Basic Services, Environmental Justice<\/li>\n<li>Ability to support and train others in a collegial environment<\/li>\n<li>Ability to think about the law as an instrument of social justice to advance human rights and reduce poverty<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work with a diversity of clients<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work with minimal supervision, together with the necessary initiative to contribute to the development of the relevant area of work, as well as the development of CALS as an organisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To apply submit cover letter indicating why you want this job as well as the names and contact details of three referees, detailed CV, certified copies of degrees\/diplomas and an academic transcript and writing sample of not more than 10 pages, on the Wits i-Recruitment platform located at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/irec.wits.ac.za\/\">https:\/\/irec.wits.ac.za<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Should you have difficulties using this portal, please email Nomalanga Ndamane\u2013Letsatsi at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:nomalanga.ndamane-letsatsi@wits.ac.za\">nomalanga.ndamane-letsatsi@wits.ac.za<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Application Deadline:\u00a0<\/strong>30th June, 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a civil society organisation based at the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand.
