mothers2mothers (m2m) is an Africa-based NGO that unlocks the potential of women to eliminate paediatric AIDS and create healthy families across\u00a0eight sub-Saharan African\u00a0countries. m2m trains, employs, and helps empower HIV-positive women to work as community healthcare workers in understaffed health centres and underserved communities. Through a peer-to-peer approach, these \u2018Mentor Mothers\u2019 deliver a range of health services, advice, and support to women and their families.<\/p>\n

Started in Cape Town, South Africa in 2001 with an initial focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, m2m has innovated and built on its\u00a0strengths and now provides\u00a0family-centred support for a range of related health and social issues spanning pregnancy, birth, childhood, and adolescence. It\u00a0also partners with governments and other NGOs on the adoption of its programme to spread the Mentor Mother Model and its benefits.<\/p>\n

Summary<\/strong>\u00a0Background<\/strong><\/p>\n

Children and Adolescents Are My Priority (CHAMP) is a 5-year, USAID-funded orphaned and other vulnerable children and adolescents (OVCA) project led by mothers2mothers (m2m) with support from two resource partners Grassroot Soccer and Zoe-Life.
\nWorking across Mpumalanga province, South Africa, CHAMP will utilize evidence-based interventions and innovative approaches to contribute to USAID\u2019s strategic objective of improving the wellbeing of OVCA, through comprehensive and coordinated evidence-based interventions that strengthen the capacity of families and communities to care for OVCA in sub-districts with high HIV prevalence.
\nThe target groups include children and adolescents living with HIV, single and double orphans, children and adolescents living with people living with HIV, adolescents exposed to alcohol, drugs and gender based violence, and children of sex workers. The target age group overall is 0-17 years, with a particular focus on adolescents (10-17 years).<\/p>\n

Project Goal:<\/strong>\u00a0To reduce HIV incidence and improve the health, wellbeing and resilience of OVCA exposed to, living with or made vulnerable by HIV\/AIDS<\/p>\n

The project has five objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Improve HIV and TB treatment success among OVCA through early identification, linkage to care, adherence and retention in comprehensive HIV care, treatment and support services<\/li>\n
  2. Increase HIV risk avoidance among OVCA through HIV and sexual and reproductive health education, and access to youth-friendly services to promote safer sex practices (consistent condom use, contraceptive use, delay of sexual debut)<\/li>\n
  3. Improve the safety of vulnerable children, adolescents and youth by strengthening linkages and coordination of child protection and prevention of gender-based violence services<\/li>\n
  4. Strengthen the stability of vulnerable children, adolescents and youth by increasing opportunities for household economic security and linkages to social protection<\/li>\n
  5. Strengthen schooling opportunities for vulnerable children, adolescents and youth by supporting retention and progression through schooling and linkages to vocational training<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
