Listed on the JSE and the Namibian Stock Exchange, FirstRand Limited is one of the largest financial institutions in South Africa providing banking and insurance products and services to retail, commercial, corporate and public sector customers.<\/p>\n
Since then, the founders, together with a long standing and stable management team, have created the second largest financial institution in South Africa. The founders still retain a significant equity stake in FirstRand and Laurie Dippenaar is the Group’s non-executive Chairman.<\/p>\n
FirstRand was created in its current form in February 1998, through the disposal of Anglo American\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s interests in First National Bank and Southern Life and the merger of these assets with RMB and Momentum. At the time this was the largest transaction in the history of local financial services.<\/p>\n
Since 1998, the Group has grown through a combination of corporate action and organic growth. Examples of corporate action include:<\/p>\n
Greenfields<\/strong><\/p>\n In addition to the corporate action described above the strategy of the Group, where appropriate, has been starting and growing completely new businesses, which the Group refers to as its “greenfields” approach.
