{"id":55529,"date":"2020-07-02T12:39:25","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T10:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joblistsouthafrica.com\/?p=55529"},"modified":"2020-07-02T12:39:25","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T10:39:25","slug":"sonke-current-employment-opportunity-apply-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joblistsouthafrica.com\/sonke-current-employment-opportunity-apply-now.html","title":{"rendered":"Sonke Current Employment Opportunity &#8211; Apply Now!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sonke, with offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Eastern Cape in South Africa, Sonke works globally, and especially across Africa, to strengthen government, civil society and citizen capacity to take action to promote gender equality, prevent domestic and sexual violence and reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>In this way the organisation contributes to the development of societies in which men, women, youth and children can enjoy equitable, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of just and democratic societies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job Title: Sex Workers\u2019 Rights \u00a0Project Specialist<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Location: <\/strong>Cape Town<br \/>\n<strong>Remuneration:<\/strong> R420,000 total cost to company per annum<br \/>\n<strong>Employment Type:<\/strong> Fixed term<\/p>\n<p>The purpos eo fthis position is to be responsible for carrying out project activities housed within Sonke\u2019s Policy, Development and Advocacy Unit (PDA) in relation to the rights of sex workers. The incumbent will be supervised by the PDA Unit Manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsibilities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1.\u00a0Advocacy and budget management\n<ul>\n<li>Manage Sonke\u2019s\u00a0 policy advocacy work \u00a0pertaining to decriminalisation of sex work and the advancement of the rights of sex workers on a national level.<\/li>\n<li>Manage the\u00a0 budget and ensure the project deliverables are \u00a0implemented \u00a0timeously.<\/li>\n<li>Advocate for the improved implementation of legislation and policies that protect and promote the rights of sex workers and pursue the reform of legislation that discriminates against them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>2. Campaign work\n<ul>\n<li>With partner organisations, participate in \u00a0\u00a0collaborative campaigns which entails:<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring \u00a0complaints emanating from partner organisations related to human rights abuse on sex workers.<\/li>\n<li>Building an evidence base for advocacy on decriminalisation.<\/li>\n<li>Participating \u00a0actively in monthly Asijiki Coalition meetings, as well as the annual AGM, including \u00a0participating \u00a0in other relevant coalitions (GBV), building their advocacy footprint and influence.<\/li>\n<li>Participate in the \u2018Criminal Records Coalition\u2019 to collect data in relation to \u00a0criminal records negative\u00a0 impact \u00a0on sex workers and advocating \u00a0for law reform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>3. Monitoring and collaboration\n<ul>\n<li>Monitor the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for HIV\/TB and STI\u2019s with regard to factors that affect the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS on sex workers.<\/li>\n<li>Nurture relationships with relevant government departments, SANAC, women\u2019s ministry, parliament and Commission for Gender Equality.<\/li>\n<li>Lobby SAPS, the Department of Community Safety and other law enforcement agencies on constructive and respectful engagements with sex workers and clients.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen partnerships with the police and other law enforcement agencies to ensure more respectful relationships between stakeholders \u00a0within the sex work industry and law enforcement agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>4. Publications and submissions\n<ul>\n<li>Produce parliamentary and other submissions to government on bills, policies and key issues pertaining to the human rights of sex workers.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge stereotypes about sex workers and sex worker clients, and generate positive, contextualised and evidence-based popular news articles and social media posts on sex work, sex workers and sex worker clients.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct a series of awareness and education dialogues through community media engagements on sex work related issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Required:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A degree in social science or equivalent related to the position;<\/li>\n<li>A Master\u2019s Degree with focus on subjects relating to gender, health and human rights is preferred but not essential;<\/li>\n<li>1-2 years \u00a0relevant experience in a related area;<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with existing South African, regional and international laws and policies related to gender-based violence, HIV and AIDS;<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with the functions and duties of relevant Chapter 9 Institutions and other relevant government departments and oversight bodies;<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with strategies and programmes aimed at gender-based violence and protection of the rights of marginalised groups;<\/li>\n<li>Fluency in two South African languages; and<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to engage with the media when required to.<\/li>\n<li>Competencies and Skills required:\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to interact with staff at all levels, and communicate clearly and concisely with colleagues<\/li>\n<li>Strong research, writing and analytical skills<\/li>\n<li>Proposal and report writing skills.<\/li>\n<li>Drafting of press releases and social media posts<\/li>\n<li>Ability to make presentations<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work independently<\/li>\n<li>Ability to prepare and give trainings and presentations<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work under pressure<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to travel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Personal qualities required:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Confident, assertive communicator who can work comfortably with diverse groups of people, across all levels and various forms of media<\/li>\n<li>Attention to detail and displays a high level of integrity<\/li>\n<li>Able to prioritise work and manage deadlines<\/li>\n<li>Innovative and creative,
