In delivering \u2018social science that makes a difference\u2019 in South Africa and on the African continent the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) initiates and undertakes policy-oriented research programmes and projects from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.<\/p>\n
The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) is a specialist research centre within the Human Sciences Research Council that is dedicated to producing policy relevant research and statistical analysis in the domain of science, technology and innovation, in the African context. CeSTII has a vision to be a thought and practice leader, as well as an acknowledged site of excellence in its field, and aims to consolidate its position as a value-adding component of South Africa\u2019s national innovation system. \nCeSTII seeks to appoint a Chief Research Specialist on a 5-year contract, to work within a number of projects within the Centre. Therefore, this is a project-funded position. We are looking for an accomplished candidate with experience of policy-relevant research to lead the work programme on science, technology and innovation indicators and measurement. The level of the appointment will depend on the mix of qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

\n\u2022 Developing the measurement work programme of CeSTII in supporting national policies for science, technology and innovation;
\n\u2022 Conducting good quality research, analysis and evaluation (using qualitative and\/or quantitative methodologies) that has both strategic and policy relevance;
\n\u2022 Networking with major users and funders of social science research to understand their research needs;
\n\u2022 Designing programmes for problem-oriented interdisciplinary research;
\n\u2022 Managing research teams and large scale long term research projects;
\n\u2022 Delivering high-quality results and reports to budget and deadline;
\n\u2022 Communicating research findings and publishing in refereed journals;
\n\u2022 Building national and international research links;
\n\u2022 Mentoring junior researchers.<\/p>\n
\nA doctorate in the social sciences or related disciplines.
\n\u2022At least 6 years of experience as a senior academic;
\n\u2022A strong record of published research with up to 12 peer-reviewed articles in both local and international journals \u2013 several of which should be first authored;
\n\u2022Expertise in one of the priority research areas of CeSTII: science, technology and innovation policy and measurement, as well as economic development and other management and social science disciplines;
\n\u2022A sound grounding in research methods, especially quantitative approaches, will be a strong recommendation;
\n\u2022Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
\n\u2022A strong user orientation, based on a commitment to social research that makes a difference;
\n\u2022The ability and enthusiasm to lead research teams involved in large-scale multidisciplinary research, to manage research teams, and to mentor and train their members.
