In delivering \u2018social science that makes a difference\u2019, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research
\nCouncil initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research.<\/p>\n
The Human and Social Capabilities (HSC) research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, many of which are donor-funded.<\/p>\n
One focus area of the HSC research programme is research on the social determinants of HIV\/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. The work strives to address these health problems at their source, namely, at both the social and population levels. It also includes social aspects of delivery models for biomedical interventions to optimise the delivery of interventions.<\/p>\n
The HSC research programme will be implementing the South African National HIV prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour, and Communication Survey (also known as SABSSM VI). The programme had previously advertised nurse\/phlebotomist data collector positions nationwide and is currently targeting individuals from the specific locations listed below due to the diversity and operational needs (requirements) for the successful implementation of the survey. \n\u2022Successful candidates will be responsible for the implementation of the survey by collecting data in households using electronic tablets to interview selected participants.
\n\u2022Attend training sessions in full;
\n\u2022Successful candidates will be required to work within a team.
\n\u2022Provide potential participants information about the project.
\n\u2022Complete HTS consent forms for all participants.
\n\u2022Collect dried blood spots (DBS) from children, adults, and via heel prick from infants (professional nurse only).
\n\u2022Ensure quality work by following processes, procedures, and steps, outlined in the training manual.
\n\u2022Manage fieldwork expenses by completing reconciliations following HSRC rules and regulations.
\n\u2022Manage assets provided by HSRC.<\/p>\n
\n\u2022Must be a nurse or phlebotomist with relevant qualifications. If not a nurse or phlebotomist, please do not apply.
\n\u2022Must be able to draw blood.
\n\u2022Professional training in nursing or phlebotomy should permit the participant to draw blood without any supervision.
\n\u2022Above-average ability to read, write and speak is essential in English and other South African languages spoken in the specified locations above.
\n\u2022Familiarity with the use of electronic tablets.
\n\u2022Prior relevant working experience working in the community outside a clinic context will be advantageous.
\n\u2022Willingness to work in a team.
\n\u2022Willingness to travel long distances, within and outside of one\u2019s province when required.
\n\u2022Willingness to visit selected households during weekends and after hours.
\n\u2022Training in HIV counselling and testing will be advantageous.
\n\u2022Having a valid driver\u2019s license will be an added advantage.
\n\u2022Proven ability to exercise discretion in dealing with confidential or sensitive matters
\n\u2022Preference will be given to nurses\/phlebotomists who have worked in research (HSRC or elsewhere) in a similar position.
\n\u2022Available for a period of up to 11 months but this will be determined by the availability of maps per province. This is a project-based position for 11 months and not permanent.
\n\u2022Must be currently registered with the South African Nursing Council.<\/p>\n
