In delivering \u2018social science that makes a difference\u2019, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.<\/p>\n
The Human and Social Capabilities research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, three-quarters of which are donor-funded. The Human and Social Capabilities division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, well-being and promote a socially just and cohesive society.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022The Bursary may not hold any bursaries, awards, assistantships concurrently with the NRF bursary, which bind him\/her to enter the service of any organisation upon completion of his\/her studies. The Bursary may also not be held concurrently with any other NRF or South African Government funded bursary scheme or organisations like the CSIR, MRC, etc.
\n\u2022Students who already hold NRF bursaries or who hold any other South African government funded scholarship.
\n\u2022The Bursar registered on a full-time basis for the degree, may not hold full-time salaried employment during the tenure of the scholarship, but he\/she will be allowed to undertake teaching, tutorials, assistance or demonstration duties and be remunerated for his\/her services at the normal university tariff for services rendered.
\n\u2022Fulltime employees or individuals on sabbatical will not be considered.
\n\u2022Foreign nationals, employed Full-time who have been awarded leave\/sabbatical for the period of study and who receive a bursary from their employers do not qualify for full-time bursaries.<\/p>\n
\n\u2022Have completed or graduated with an Honours degree and be registered for a Master\u2019s degree in the Social Sciences \/Public Health or a relevant field at a public higher education institution in South Africa; with a special interest in Nutrition
\n\u2022Be curious and enthusiastic about a research career that includes qualitative and quantitative data analysis;
\n\u2022Have good interpersonal skills and sound communication skills (verbal as well as report writing);
\n\u2022Have a sound grounding in research methods, qualitative or quantitative and growing conceptual ability;
\n\u2022Be willing to participate in the broader research project as and when necessary, including an interest in participating in data collection and analysis as well as contributing to research outputs (e.g. reports, journal articles, chapters in books).<\/p>\n
