The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) is a specialist research centre within the Human Sciences Research Council that is dedicated to producing policy relevant research and statistical analysis in the domain of science, technology and innovation, in the African context. CeSTII has a vision to be a thought and practice leader, as well as an acknowledged site of excellence in its field, and aims to consolidate its position as a value-adding component of South Africa\u2019s national innovation system. CeSTII includes specialists in the area of science, technology and innovation measurement and policy, as well as economic development and other social science disciplines.<\/p>\n

\nCeSTII wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced candidate to fill a vacant position in its office in Cape Town. The main responsibility is to build and strengthen the capacity of the Centre in the field of innovation surveys which includes managing the survey process, analyzing data and producing fact sheets, reports, policy briefs and so on to communicate with stakeholders. The level of appointment will depend on qualifications, experience, publication record and recent performance.<\/p>\n
\n\u2022Design, conceptualize and execute multi-year research programmes, focused on Innovation measurement;
\n\u2022Design and manage all aspects of large scale, national surveys to international standards, and contribute to debates on appropriate methodologies for measuring the socio-economic impact of science, technology and innovation;
\n\u2022Develop and update research instruments, research designs, and sampling frames;
\n\u2022Manage and undertake field work for large scale research studies including surveys;
\n\u2022Conduct statistical data analysis or interpretation of such analysis, particularly on Innovation and economic development;
\n\u2022Undertake analysis of data and develop policy relevant research outputs and data from other secondary sources;
\n\u2022Provide technical research support to researchers in the HSRC and external clients;
\n\u2022Provide mentorship to junior researchers in terms of research skills and in further studies;
\n\u2022Prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication of a high standard;
\n\u2022Communicate research findings at conferences, policy dialogues, workshops and other meetings;
\n\u2022Disseminate research findings and implications through various modalities;
\n\u2022Participate in the development of proposals to seek external funding from both local and international funding agencies;
\n\u2022Publish in the peer reviewed scientific literature;
\n\u2022Develop personal academic competencies through formal and informal training activities.<\/p>\n
\nKey requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n\u2022Experience in the interpretation of economic indicators will be an advantage;
\n\u2022Training in science, technology and innovation measurement and\/or policy, economics or econometrics will be an advantage;
\n\u2022An established research career as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications;
\n\u2022Experience in survey research methods, ideally with strong quantitative skills;
\n\u2022Ability to work across disciplinary boundaries;
\n\u2022Understanding of South Africa\u2019s political economy and economic development challenges;
\n\u2022Ability to mentor interns and lead research teams;
\n\u2022Experience of engaging with policy-makers;
\n\u2022Ability to work well under pressure and to meet deadlines.
\n\u2022Experience in science, technology and innovation indicators and measurement.<\/p>\n
