Job Title: Fibre Technician (Cape Town)<\/strong> Job Summary:<\/strong> The Fibre Technician plays a prominent role in the Telecommunication industry, conducting installs and maintains fibre optic cable as and when required. Accountabilities and Responsibilities:<\/strong> Resolve, repair and install fibre optics systems (Layer1&2) and ensure that they work properly. Working Conditions:<\/strong> \u2022 Extended and irregular work hours where applicable to meet deliverables.<\/p>\n \u2022 Work during weekends and public holidays as required.<\/p>\n \u2022 Standby and overtime as required.<\/p>\n Desired Experience & Qualification:<\/strong> \u2022 National Certificate or equivalent<\/p>\n \u2022 Post-secondary education in electronics, telecommunications, or computer technology.<\/p>\n \u2022 On-the-job training and industry certification is an added advantage.<\/p>\n \u2022 Fibre Optic Association Certified (FOA) or Certified Fibre Optic Technician (CFOT)<\/p>\n EXPERIENCE:<\/strong><\/p>\n 3 years’ technical experience in the Optical Fibre environment (Construction and Maintenance) Technical Skills:<\/strong> Personal attributes\/Behavioural Competencies<\/strong>: Ethics:<\/strong>

\nDuties & Responsibilities:<\/strong>
\nMain Purpose:<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nThe Fibre Technician works both inside and outside and is responsible to take care of the installation troubleshooting and other technical aspects.
\nThe Fibre Technician should have proper knowledge of various electronic components and computer operating systems.
\nThe Fibre Technician should have a proper understanding of cabling various electronic components.
\nIt is important for the Fibre Technician to have basic knowledge of the operation and application of electrical components and common measurement instruments. They must have hands-on experience to work with hand and power tools.<\/p>\n
\nThe primary functions of the Fibre Technician include:<\/p>\n
\nExamine and replace faulty and old fibre optic cables and organize scheduled maintenance routines.
\nTake care of fibre splicing and rectify fibre optic problem areas.
\nDevelop sensor indicators and conduct timely inspections to make sure that faulty fibre optic system does not destabilize its performance.
\nExecute premises cabling and take care of the underground and underwater cabling requirements.
\nKeep track of the signal strength of different devices to provide adequate performance.
\nFormulate and maintain system records and system designs.
\n1st line support of facility and power incidents.
\n1st line support on Layer-2 incidents.
\nAdheres to all the safety policies as defined by the EH&S act and the LA\/H20 policies regarding Safety.
\nAdherence to Fleet policy, SHEQ requirements, IT policy and all other applicable LA\/H20 policies.
\nOversee, monitor and mentor the Assistant Technician.
\nAny other tasks\/duties as allocated and required by the line manager.<\/p>\n
\n\u2022 Field based with excessive driving.<\/p>\n
\nKnowledge, qualifications and experience<\/p>\n
\nMust have a clean valid driver\u2019s license with – 3 years driving experience
\nKnowledge of Environmental, Health and Safety Management regulations pertaining to fibre optic installations
\nKnowledge and understanding of ICT industry is essential
\nKnowledge of test equipment (OTDR) and Health and Safety is recommended
\nProblem solving individuals with a competitive nature will stand out above the peers<\/p>\n
\nComputer Literacy: Good working knowledge of MS Outlook and other applicable software.
\nSplicing: Able to joint optical fibres end-to-end, using heat. Registration as an FOA Splicer (5-day course) is highly recommended
\nOTDR Analysis: Good working knowledge of fault finding \/ testing equipment OTDR
\nData Integrity: Update applicable documentation to ensure accurate records are maintained
\nTechnical Applications: Remain conversant on technical applications used in the telecommunications field<\/p>\n
