Job Title: Communications Officer for the Environmental Programmes
Job Location: Newland’s office, Cape Town
Report to: Communications Manager
This is a Permanent position.
The purpose of the Communication Officer together with the Communication Manager is to support the Environmental Programmes with their communication needs so as to add value, showcase the successes in a clear and meaningful way and help achieve the environmental outcomes.
- Engage with Environmental Programme teams and individuals to understand their work in order to provide communication guidance and content direction in support of their environmental engagements
- Implement appropriate communication tactics to assist WWF in achieving conservation and environmental outcomes as well as increasing engagement for WWF. These include:
- Review drafts of research, concepts and strategic frameworks to propose clear edits or fresh rewrites, decode science speak and remove unnecessary jargon as well as format the content so that it is accurate and well-portrayed for relevant audiences
- Package content in many formats – from writing first person blogs to feature articles, summary reports to fact sheets, speeches to video scripts, infographics to diagrams, as well as creating content for partner channels and messaging for campaigns
- Develop various communication materials – from defining the project brief to editing content, selecting images to overseeing design – and managing all supplier relationships in the process
- Identify media opportunities and developing appropriate media releases and op eds
- Create compelling WWF web content and building simple web pages within WWF’s CMS
- Using social media platforms to create dialogue around our work as well as other topical issues
- Ensure that all opportunities to communicate WWF’s work are maximised, and pitching and initiating innovative ways to achieve awareness and strong engagement with supporters
- Report into and support the environmental communications manager in analysing and identifying key environmental leverage points, and success stories, within the scope of WWF’s work
- Contribute to the annual and monthly planning of communications activities and content, as well as creating and managing individual projects to ensure that deliverables are well-planned with clear expectations and deadlines
- Monitor media reports and communication activities monthly and evaluate both quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as regularly sharing this with the appropriate teams and interested parties
- A degree in media, communication, PR or other relevant field. An additional qualification in environment or social sciences would be an advantage
- Minimum of five years’ communication experience, preferably in the conservation sector
- Articulate, confident with communicating verbally and able to engage and interact at various levels
- English writing skills, similar skills in other SA languages would be an advantage
- Strong editing and proofreading, plus experience in managing the design and production process
- Understanding of the issues in relation to WWF-SA’s mission
- An interest in and commitment to environmental and conservation issues, as well as an understanding of the connection between social issues and the environment
- Proven ability of working effectively across a range of channels and media platforms
- Must work well in a team and have experience in diverse and complex organisation
- A positive attitude and the desire to share ideas and learnings
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop would be an advantage
- Driver’s licence
