Job Title: Behavioural Specialist
Job Location: Cape Town
Working hours: 20-24 hours per week
Start Date: January 2019
Salary: Dependent on experience
The purpose of the position is to deliver counselling services to 80/160 children in our programme in 4 schools in the CBD of Cape Town and support the Schools Manager and Coaches in the delivery of the schools programme.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver a mentoring programme with students both on a 1:1 basis and in a whole group setting
- Create new group mentoring sessions around the core principles of School of Hard Knocks that suit the needs of the group
- Provide information and advice to enable pupils to make choices about their own learning, behaviour and attendance
- Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress, achievements, behaviours and attendance
- Assist in the monitoring and evaluating of all pupils on the course
- Be aware and support differences and ensure all pupils on the course have equal access to the mentoring programme
- Be aware of, and comply with, policies and procedures relating to child protection; health and safety; confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to the programmes manager
- Communicate effectively with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with the school to support achievement and progress of pupils on the course.
- Attend and participate in regular meetings, training and other learning activities as required, contributing to the overall ethos and aims of the charity
- Develop good relationships with school staff and outside agencies, including exchanging relevant information professionally
- Attend where required, Parents evenings or other specialist school events where SoHK presence is required
- Support pupils on the side of the pitch, who are struggling with their own emotions or behaviour enabling them to get back into the programme
- Support the assessment of pupils to determine those in need of particular help and support
- Assist with and advise on the mentoring of the most complex and challenging beneficiaries
- Train SoHK staff to enhance programme delivery
Requirements:
- Experience of working with challenging young people
- Child safeguarding knowledge
- Ability to build rapport with young people with a variety of needs
- Ability to tailor interventions to meet the needs of the students on the course and support coaches to maintain these interventions
- Ethical knowledge on how and when to disclose as well as refer participants to healthcare professionals
- Communication skills
- Understanding of education system
- Writing skills for reports or referrals
- Ability to time manage effectively
- Evidence of group facilitation
- Driven and passionate to deliver the charity’s objectives, in line with its values of Integrity, Excellence, Empowerment and Commitment
- Set standards in your own delivery, being meticulous in your preparation and reviews
