In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) is a statutory council dedicated to conducting human and social science research, thus contributing to the pool of global knowledge, and thereby improving the quality of life of people on the African continent, particularly South Africans. The HSRC promotes and undertakes public interest research. This research aims to advance South Africa and Africa’s understanding of and engagement with its social conditions and the particular contexts within which these social conditions occur.

The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) research programme actively enhances the contribution of the HSRC as a strategic partner in knowledge production and a resource for informing and deepening public debate, national dialogue and theoretical discourse on key national, regional, and international issues and dominant trends related to democracy; development; justice; governance and service delivery. DCES’ objective is to create relevant knowledge that strengthens our democratic society, its institutions, and practices of governance in order to promote social justice.

The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council requires the services of a Freelance Research Editor to provide high quality editorial services for their research reports for the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).
