The Payments Association of South Africa (PASA) is looking for a Manager: Strategy and Research to ensure disciplined and rigorous strategy development process supported by adequate breadth and depth in research results.

Job Summary:
The role requires someone with the ability to think strategically and communicate clearly combined with the ability to provide sound evidence-based perspectives on strategic matters. The successful applicant will also be able to prove their existing leadership experience and stakeholder engagement prowess through building consensus across diverse stakeholders and creating common objectives for the payments industry.

PASA was recognised by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) as the Payment System Management Body (PSMB) of South Africa in 1998. In this role, PASA oversees the function of 18 different payment streams ranging from low value debit card transactions to high value bond exchange payments.

In serving its mandate, PASA has supported several initiatives that have shaped the payments landscape in South Africa, including the Rapid Payments Programme and DebiCheck.

PASA strives to employ and profile exceptional candidates into being recognised at an industry and international payments level. The working environment is cordial, but performance driven, with a strong focus on both compliance and modernisation.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Guide and lead a structured strategic dialogue related to the relevant payment streams and eco-systems, specifically in relevant formal interbank forums.
•Research and provide comprehensive evidence-based perspectives on strategic matters.
•Assist with specific ad-hoc strategic focus areas and topics and facilitate insight, decision making and progress in specifically mandated work groups.
•Articulate strategic positions and recommendations in formal documentation and from time to time also publish relevant high quality position papers.
•Facilitate strategic dialogue to ensure that a shared narrative on preferred strategic direction is created amongst key stakeholders.
•Participate in or lead relevant project work groups and ensure that project implementation is progressed through the provision of strategic recommendations, and by making relevant strategic options and choices clear at all decision junctions.

Requirements:
TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
•In-depth retail or corporate banking experience and understanding (non-negotiable)
•8-10 years hands-on experience with research and project support in a card or electronic payments environment
•Solid strategic exposure in various fields in the payments industry
•System and architectural knowledge and logic
•Regulatory and compliance knowledge related to payment systems
•Ability to facilitate diverse stakeholders towards common goals
•Project Management knowledge and coordination skills

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
•Strategic thinking
•Commercial understanding
•Conceptual skills
•Knowledge of research methodologies
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing and presentations
•Problem-solving skills
•Advanced analytical skill e.g., quantitate, qualitative, and system thinking ability
•Facilitation and negotiation skills

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
•Relevant tertiary qualification in either Engineering, Economy/Econometrics, Accounting or Commerce.
•The completion of the PASA Certificate in Foundational Payments is preferred. The completion of the programme during the employee induction period will be considered as an alternative.
