The purpose of this position is to support communications, marketing, and partnerships programmes at Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI). This includes developing, implementing, and coordinating a wide range of internal and external communication activities, content, and events in support of the institute’s strategy, working with all departments at AHRI.

 

 

 

 

Job Title: Communications Officer

We are looking for someone with strong storytelling, written and visual communication skills. Our ideal candidate will be interested in health research and the use of communication platforms and tactics to promote scientific research and interventions for the health and well-being of communities. They would be a team player, able to function with minimal supervision and work well in a diverse and innovative academic context.

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will be primarily based at the AHRI-Somkhele campus, with travel as necessary to AHRI-Durban.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Undergraduate degree or equivalent diploma in journalism, communication, or a related field.

Minimum Experience:
1. A minimum of four years of experience in a media or communications environment.

Skills Required:
1. Fluency in spoken and written Zulu.
2. Excellent written English ability
3. High level of computer literacy, including some competency in basic design/layout
4. Strong storytelling and research skills
5. Photography skills
6. Ability to take initiative and work independently
7. Flexibility
8. Strong interpersonal communication skills

Added Advantage:
1. Basic video and/or audio shooting and editing skills
2. Prior experience managing website content and social media channels
3. Experience in communications in a scientific research/academic context
4. Related honours degree
