AHRI has an exciting opportunity for a Research Laboratory Technician based in the Ndung’u research group. The incumbent’s main responsibility is to perform bioinformatic sequence analysis on near full-length HIV genomes and to work with human cells and HIV in the BSL-2 and BSL-3. He/She will perform molecular biology nucleic acid isolation, PCR, sequencing, in vitro infections and bNAb sensitivity assays.
Note: From time to time he/she may be required to perform other related duties and tasks as authorised by the Line Manager

Job Summary:
1. Perform laboratory activities related to the project.
2. Assist senior researcher with experiments, quality control and data verification.
3. Undertake blood sample processing when necessary.
4. Perform molecular biology experiments including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, sequencing and cloning.
5. Perform sequencing and bioinformatic analysis
6. Preparation of reagents, maintenance of cell lines and monitoring of viral cultures.
7. Perform human tissue culture and virus infectivity experiments.
8. Perform general laboratory housekeeping / equipment maintenance.
9. Participation in the institution’s academic activities including journal club, lab meetings, research update meetings and etc.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Honours or Master’s degree in Molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, virology, immunology or equivalent in related field
Minimum Experience:
1. Processing and storing of human samples e.g. bloods, tissue, cells, RNA/DNA etc
2. Minimum 1 to 3 years’ experience in biomedical research laboratory
3. Experience with HIV lab research
4. Good Clinical Laboratory Practice
5. BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory experience advantageous
6. Experience in molecular biology, including PCR, sequencing, sequence analysis and cloning
7. High level of computer literacy
