Job Title: Researcher
Job Location: Cape Town
Start date: As soon as possible
The position will be a one-year contract with a three months’ probation period
The purpose of the researcher is to work with limited support to lead research projects and produce publications to support the organisations lobbying and advocacy on a wide range of thematic areas, which include urban land reform, Land Value Capture, Inclusionary Housing, municipal fiscal policy and finance for catalytic projects.
Responsibilities
- Lead small and medium research projects related to land based financing, municipal fiscal policy and finance strategies, land and property markets and urban development management processes
- Analyse policies and formulate policy proposals and undertake advocacy work
- Undertake research or project related surveys
- Assist with the development of popular information materials for various audiences
- Support, undertake consultancy work related to housing and urban development
Requirements:
- Relevant University degree at honours or Masters, level (preferred degrees: Economics, Town and Regional Planning, Environmental Law)
- Master’s degree, have demonstrated abilities to work with a team, deadline driven and must be passionate about social and spatial justice
- Minimum of five years’ research experience in the field of housing and/or urban development
- Knowledge of housing and urban development policy frameworks
- Knowledge of issues relating to the development sector
- Strong and thorough research skills
- Ability to multi task
- Pays attention to detail
- Detailed knowledge and experience of social media
- Competence in Microsoft Office products, especially (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Time management, planning and organising skills
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential
- Verbal and written communication, research and analytical skills are required
- Fluency in English is a prerequisite and knowledge of at least one other South African language is an added advantage
- Valid driver’s licence (own car would be an advantage)
