EAST COAST RADIO has a highly exciting opportunity available! We are searching for a News Editor to join our vibrant and dynamic team.
The main purpose of the position is to lead and manage news team in the execution of the daily news agenda.
Set news agenda and take overall responsibility for multimedia output and operational deliverable required. Provide editorial guidance, brainstorm and execute stories for the various platforms. Lead in achieving content and multi-media strategy goals in the newsroom. Assist in the development of the newsroom. Ensure unbiased, independent content delivery that upholds journalistic ethics.

Job Summary:
Operations:
•Manage the day to day operations of the newsroom;
•Supervise and coordinate work of reporters and other editors;
•Managing diary /roster & deploying of journalist.
•Delegate stories/content/projects/work to team members to ensure best possible spread of workload;
•Cultivate stringers and freelance contributers;
•Overseeing all day-to-day editorial operations; prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work;
•Overseeing video and visual multimedia content across all digital assets.
•Managing and overseeing technical equipment and online component.
•Develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal.
•Edit scripts to ensure news reports are produced in an effective and timely manner. (quality control and content).
•Analyse news developments (local/national and international).
•Work closely with Head of Journalism

Strategy Focus:
•Focus team to cover local news in Durban and KZN
•Drive news agenda on air & online inline
•Lead in developing unique news content and multi-media strategy in the newsroom.
•Lead in delivering on a competitive product and a functional news environment.
•Update station and newsroom on international trends and ideas and implement where approved
•Leading the news team
•Encourage a healthy work culture and positive work ethic in the department that are in line with ECR Values
•Manage the performance of team members and develop individuals
•Drive collaboration between sister stations
•Ensure training, coaching and development of current young journalist/talent
•Development of journalist to fill new skills required for video and digital platforms

Leadership & Talent Development:
•Leading the news team.
•Encourage a healthy work culture and positive work ethic in the department.
•Manage the performance of team members and develop individuals.
•Drive collaboration between sister stations.
•Responsible for training, coaching and development of current young journalist/talent
•Development of journalist to fill new skills required for video and digital platforms;

OnAir Focus:
•Will be required to present news bulletins, weather and finance segments and any breaking news as and when required
•Ensure content is of high quality;
•Check accuracy, language, writing and legal compliance of all news items before filing;
•Proof read all stories;

General:
•Broadcast unique news content and current affairs to the attention of the station’s listeners and target market as and when required.
•Searching, researching and compilation of news.
•Stand in as News Cast Editor & Multi Media Journalist as and when required.
•Assist with any function within News as and when required.
•Participate in stations promotions as and when required
Requirements

Educational Requirements:
•Diploma or degree in journalism or equivalent.
•Management diploma will be an advantage.

Minimum Requirements & Experience:
•5 – 7 years experience in news reporting and journalism in a commercial radio environment of which 1 – 2 years experience should be in a leadership capacity within a newsroom environment.
•Digital news experience is a requirement.
•Driver’s license and own vehicle.
•Proficiency in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
•Digital Content management system experience and News compilation software experience is an advantage.
