The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level.
Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The UNEP Office Support internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Head of UNEP Office in South Africa, the intern will:
•Research, analyse and present information gathered from diverse sources to support the implementation of Regional Office for Africa (ROA) project activities in South Africa;
•Support the review of project deliverables;
•Assist with the organization of meetings and outreach events, developing necessary background materials, sourcing appropriate speakers, and report writing;
•Support communication activities (e.g. draft stories for social media, Regional Office for Africa newsletter, etc);
•Depending on the incumbent’s skills and background (e.g. specific language skills), country- or region-specific research, and review tasks may be assigned;
•Support other activities as requested.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study: Graduate/ Still studying Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
