Action Volunteers Africa (AVA) is a registered nonprofit organization, based in Cape Town, that aims to contribute to a society where every unemployed young person is empowered to build a sustainable future. AVA embraces volunteering as a tool to unlock the potential of unemployed youth (18 to 25 years) by training and placing them in full-time volunteering positions in a variety of contexts.
Action Volunteers Africa (AVA) seeks to appoint a Development Manager to be based in Cape Town.
Job Title: Director of Programmes
Job Location: Capetown
The purpose of the position is to manage and drive the overall development and management of the Self-Development (SD) department in AVA; as well as assisting with the implementation of a strategic approach to income generation to enhance the sustainability of AVA. The self-development department’s key role is to ensure that volunteers are supported to grow maximally during their volunteer experience.
Responsibilities:
Development of Self Development (SD) Curriculum:

- Asses the self-development requirements of the volunteer body
- Align the SD curriculum to identified outcomes to be achieved
- Prepare and facilitate SD modules when required
- Compile and prepare material for SD sessions and liaise with relevant staff for resources
- Document the AVA self-development curriculum
- Ensure High quality and relevance of all SD modules offered under the banner of AVA
- Ongoing self-improvement to ensure a high quality facilitation and delivery of all SD modules
- Develop new modules in liaison with the Director of Programmes, when required
Coordination of SD modules:
- Engage with staff of various Programme Areas regarding needs of Self-Development
- Liaise and engage with all external service providers and ensure that they provide a quality service to enhance the AVA self-development offerings
Progression:
- Design and implement a progression programme for all AVA volunteers that addresses the needs of volunteers post the AVA programme
Counseling/ Coaching of staff and volunteers:
- Manage student social workers; guidance and support with counseling, ensuring that they meet their learning outcomes as per their study requirements.
- Ensure that all volunteers who are in need of social support/counseling are referred to the social work students and receive the required support/counseling.
Requirements:

- A relevant degree, preferably in education/social sciences/psychology
- Minimum of three to five years of middle management experience
- Leadership and communication skills with computer literacy
- Demonstrate ability to relate and understand the context and challenges facing young people
- Flexible, resilient, reliable, multi-tasker with high degree of personal responsibility
- Ability to trouble shoot and solve problems quickly
- Must be an implementer and a responsive, decisive, action-orientated individual who can deliver according to deadlines
- Demonstrate ability to relate and understand the context and challenges facing young people
- Keen interest in youth development and behaviour change methodologies
- Strong networking skills and building relations with various stakeholders
- Ability to facilitate training sessions
- Own car and driver’s license essential
- Report writing and data analysis abilities
- Fluency in IsiXhosa and Afrikaans will be an advantage
