For The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a civil society organisation based at the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand. CALS is also a law clinic, registered with the Law Society of the Northern Provinces. As such, CALS connects the worlds of both academia and social justice. Job Title: Counsel and Senior Attorney

Job Position: Johannesburg

Salary:  Commensurate with experience. CALS is a grant-funded institution and the level of remuneration is dependent on available funding.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct innovative strategic litigation on behalf of CALS’ clients
  • Provide training and support to attorneys and candidate attorneys on litigious matters
  • Provide expert input into draft policies and legislation
  • Participate in the evaluation of our work, strategies and impact
  • Initiate and conduct test case litigation
  • Provide training and support to junior attorneys with less litigation experience
  • Supervise and contribute to the training and development of candidate attorneys and interns
  • Engage with communities and individuals affected by human rights violations
  • Engage with the media, including through interviews and writing opinion editorials
  • Negotiate and engage with government, the private sector and regional and national institutions
  • Provide expert input into draft policies and legislation
  • Build relationships with colleague organisations
  • Participate in the evaluation of our work, strategies and impact

Requirements:

  • An LLB or equivalent qualification; an advanced degree in law will be an advantage
  • Admission as an attorney is a non-negotiable requirement
  • Minimum of seven to 10 years’ experience we are looking for someone with significant litigation experience and expertise, preferably in public interest litigation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (fluency in other South African languages will be an advantage)
  • Experience in, or familiarity with, one or more of CALS’ areas of programmatic work, namely: Gender, Business and Human Rights, Rule of Law, Basic Services, Environmental Justice
  • Ability to support and train others in a collegial environment
  • Ability to think about the law as an instrument of social justice to advance human rights and reduce poverty
  • Ability to work with a diversity of clients
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, together with the necessary initiative to contribute to the development of the relevant area of work, as well as the development of CALS as an organisation
