Equal Education is a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members working for quality and equality in South African education, through analysis and activism. Equal Education is organised in five provinces: Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the Western Cape. Equal Education works by identifying systemic and localised problems affecting the quality of education, and addresses these problems through local and national campaign; a commitment to robust political education and campaign strategising with members; and building a strong research base through primary and secondary research.

Equal Education seeks to fill three exciting vacancies. The successful candidates must have a strong commitment to democracy, equality, intersectionality, social justice and human rights.

The Equal Education (EE) Gauteng branch has won major victories in its campaign to ensure the provision of adequate sanitation facilities. Gauteng is a critical site of struggle with proximity to the Department of Basic Education. Members are organised primarily in the East Rand, with a growing presence in Soweto.

Job Title: Deputy Head of Gauteng 
Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng
Level: This is a management position.
Position: This is a fixed term contract position reporting to the Head of Gauteng.

The Deputy Head of Gauteng supports the Head of Gauteng in leading a team of staff and volunteers on campaign strategy, youth leadership development, political education, media engagement, as well as the management of finances and human resources matters.

The successful candidate is an activist and organiser who demonstrates the ability to strengthen EE in Gauteng, exploring synergies with partner organisations across the province

Key responsibilities: Assisting the Head in developing campaign strategies with EE Gauteng members, from the identification of problems, to data collection, and mobilization; Assisting the Head in managing and developing the staff and volunteers of the Gauteng office; Coordinating and running Youth Group meetings for EE members,  and mass meetings of EE members; Organising and running trainings and political education seminars and camps for EE members; Contributing to and supporting research work; Representing EE publicly through engaging stakeholders, academics, government and media; Budget planning and monitoring and Implementing the EE Policies and Procedures

Qualifications, skills and competencies: Tertiary qualification in Social Sciences, Law, Community Organising or related field; knowledge of South African education policy; understanding of politics, law, government policy and civil society.

Experience in planning, coordinating and evaluating activities, projects and informal educational programmes; a strong background in youth organising in the civil society sector, and demonstrated success in campaign advocacy work will be advantageous;

Must be independent, driven, a self-starter, and enjoy working with young people; ability to lead and mentor; willingness to work extended hours, including weekends and public holidays when necessary; excellent spoken and written communication skills; fully computer literate and Adept at using social media

The position is based in EE’s Gauteng office in the Johannesburg CBD. However, extensive time is spent with EE members in the East Rand and in Soweto.

Job Title: Office Manager Gauteng
Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng
Level: Entry to mid-level position
Position: This is a fixed term contract position reporting to the COO.

The Office Manager is vital to the effective operations of the Gauteng office including support to satellite offices in Limpopo and Kwazulu Natal. Through the implementation of effective administrative systems; the Office Manager is able to maintain a well-resourced and welcoming work environment while coordinating on-going and arising events. EE is a dynamic organisation often engaged in multiple activities of advocacy and activism which need logistical support. This is an entry to mid-level position dependent on the initiative, interest and capacity of the successful candidate. The Office Manager has scope to participate in the planning and coordination of provincial and national activities with the guidance of the Chief Operations Officer.

Key responsibilities: General office administration; managing the housekeeper; operating reception; support three departments operating from the Gauteng office, responsible for Occupational Health and Safety, event planning and logistics; and financial administration.

Qualifications, skills and competencies: National Diploma; two to three years’ experience engaged in same or similar role, highly organised and systems oriented; strong communication skills, verbal and written; project management or events planning experience, highly favourable; proficient in excel; flexibility with a constantly changing environment; driver’s license a plus. The successful candidate will be interested and engaged in issues of social justice and understand admin & logistics as an integral part of achieving the movement’s objectives.

Job Title: Receptionist
Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape
Level: Entry level position
Position: This is a fixed term contract position reporting to the Officer Manager.

The Receptionist is the face and first point of contact for staff and visitors at national office, which is home to the General Secretary’s Office, Operations, Finance & Fundraising, Research, Communications, and Western Cape teams. He/she will have a good knowledge of the different departments and the work the departments are engaged in. The Receptionist will work under the supervision of the Office Manager and assist in the planning and coordination of provincial and national activities.

Key responsibilities: Operate reception by creating a welcoming environment for members and visitors; greet visitors in person and on the phone; direct calls; answer and refer queries appropriately; maintain security of the office space by keeping an up to date visitors log; assist with general office administration.

Qualifications, skills and competencies: Must be in possession of a matric certificate, Secretarial certification will be highly advantageous; highly organised and systems oriented; good communication skills, verbal and written; administration experience; client orientated; flexibility with a constantly changing environment. Successful candidate will be interested and engaged in issues of social justice.

Head of Fundraising
Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape
Level: Senior level position
Position: This is a fixed term contract position within the Finance and Fundraising department reporting to the Chief Financial Officer.

The Fundraiser plays an important role in supporting Equal Education’s institutional fundraising. The role requires identifying opportunities, building relationships, writing proposals and reports, participating in planning and continuous engagements with EEs strategic direction.

Key responsibilities: Identifying potential donors and funders, and ensure that EE is well marketed, preparing and submitting concept notes to selected funders, research and costing for project budgets, ensure existing funder agreements are efficiently managed and administered according to funder/donor requirements and organisational policy and procedure, stakeholders receive regular and relevant information pertaining to Equal Education’s profile, portfolio and strategy, submitting narrative reports to donors in accordance with reporting deadlines, project management particularly monitoring of activities in line with project budgets, international and local donor databases are developed and accurately maintained, and existing relationships are grown and nurtured, identify relevant trends in the funding sector that may impact on the organisation’s overall mission and strategies.

The successful candidate may be required to participate in and/or lead strategic planning processes within the organisation in order to make sure funding can be acquired for movement plans

Qualifications, skills and competencies: Degree – preferably in Humanities/Social Sciences related field, two years’ work experience in same or a similar role, project management and marketing skills advantageous, excellent written and communication skills, organised, self-motivated, and disciplined, skilled in excel to create and understand budgets, and financial reports, ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to democracy, equality, social justice and human rights, commitment to strengthening the education system in South Africa and to investing time and energy to address the inequality that affects so many of our youth, willingness to work and learn from colleagues.

Knowledge of the South African education system will be advantageous.
