The Equal Education Law Centre (EELC) is a public interest law clinic established in 2012. EELC is a team of activist and movement lawyers working to advance the struggles of young people, particularly for quality and equality in education, through legal research, advocacy and strategic litigation. The EELC works closely with our sister organisation, Equal Education, a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members.

Job Title: Deputy Director
Job Location:  Cape Town

Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and implementation of the EELC’s strategic vision
  • Under the overall stewardship of the Executive Director, leading and managing litigation and advocacy projects of the EELC
  • Share responsibilities with the Executive Director in managing and leading the EELC staff.
  • Working with the Board and Executive Director of the EELC to ensure healthy financial management of the organisation
  • Share responsibilities with the Executive Director relating to funder management, including the drafting of narrative and financial reports
  • Build and maintain relationships with social movement and community partners of the EELC
  • Represent the EELC in various forums, including in engagements with the media, government, the private sector, civil society, and funding partners
  • Support the development of the organisational culture and ethos of the EELC to reflect the values of justice and equity for which we advocate

Requirements:

  • An LLB degree and at least four years post-LLB working experience
  • Admission as an attorney of the High Court is preferable
  • Possess leadership abilities, and a record of demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice
  • Experience relating to financial management and oversight of projects is an advantage
  • Experience in leading inter-disciplinary projects and human resource management
  • Ability and passion for working with children
  • Strong research and exceptional writing skills
  • Based in the Western Cape or able to relocate
