Skateistan is an award winning international nonprofit organisation, which uses the hook of skateboarding to engage with youth. Building on its experience operating in Afghanistan and Cambodia, Skateistan aims to provide sport and educational opportunities to youth ages 5 to 17 in the Johannesburg area.
Job Title: Programmes Officer
Job Location: Johannesburg
Duration: 12 months contract
Salary: Offers a monthly salary and benefits (paid vacation, medical insurance, work related travel expenses)

The Programmes Officer is responsible for implementing the organisation’s educational
and sport curriculums, focusing on the quality of delivery and outcomes to students in Johannesburg. Focus on leading Skateistan South Africa’s Educational team through keen and creative management and ongoing staff development opportunities to enable them to provide students with the best possible educational experiences, including; knowledge and understanding of educational best practices, teaching methodology, and positive youth development.
Responsibilities:
- Create and oversee education programs: themes, teaching strategies, and implementation –
- according to Skateistan’s values and mission (ensure activities are creative and fun)
- Organise workshops and training, for both students and staff, related to education and sport:
- Oversee internal training on best practices
- Connect with external training partners to deliver training goals
- Adapt curriculum and instruction to meet the specific needs of students with disabilities,
- whether they be physical, developmental, emotional or behavioural
- Communicate with other organisations/partners
- Seek out and create connections and collaborations with other creative nonprofits and artists
- Collaborate with event coordinators to incorporate art making and displays at Skateistan and
- external events to further promote Skateistan’s programmes
- Manage incoming and outgoing emails and related correspondence
- Create policies related to programs as required
- Manage programmes budget including procuring supplies for all programs materials
- Organisation all programmes-related documents on the appropriate shared folder and updating
- regularly
- Accountable for each semester’s lesson plans and structured skateboarding curriculum
- Accountable for student administration and registration
- Accountable for scheduling of teachers and volunteers for classroom lessons, ensuring the
- correct ratio of experienced and inexperienced staff
- Accountable for organisation and maintenance of education supplies and classroom needs, as
- well as keeping an inventory of materials and tools
Programs Monitoring and Reporting:
- Overall planning and monitoring of sport and education curriculum
- Monitor and assess quality control of programs
- Monitor and evaluate students’ learning achievements
- Document classroom sessions in coordination with media department
- Monitor student blog, advising on content such as: new classes, student quotes, liaison with media department
- Observe teacher performance and classroom monitoring
- Write and collaborate on weekly reports with General Manager, Community Educator
- Oversee data entry and record keeping on Salesforce
- Create and deliver reports on program process and final result for individual educational activities, as requested, including student statistics and analysis on effectiveness and challenges
Training:
- Train staff / volunteers, especially local, in teaching methods and other skills so they can take on more responsibilities
- Accountable for organisations of weekly Programmes weekly meetings, preparation of summaries of actions to be taken, tracking of progress on planned issues
- Accountable for ensuring creative, skateboarding or sports workshops at least once per week for staff/volunteers
Requirements:
- Bachelor degree in the field of education, child psychology, or other relevant subject
- Masters Degree in the field of Education or Social Work is desirable
- Minimum of four years’ experience in teaching/training field
- Two year experience in a management position
- Knowledge of theories in the field of ‘Sports and Development’ and ‘International
- Development’
- Proficiency in other languages desirable, especially a local language (Proficient computer skills
- using G Suite, Slack, Microsoft Office, and presentation software such as Prezi, PowToon
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
- Knowledgeable and passionate about skateboarding and youth culture
- Knowledge in creative facilitation methods
- Fluency, both written and spoken, in English and other local language
- Knowledge in creative facilitation methods
- Communication, public speaking, and strategic planning skills required
- Ability to manage a team
- Experience developing engaging visual and written training materials
- Ability to handle high-stress situations in a calm manner
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, tasks efficiently
