The Equal Education Law Centre Recent Employment Opportunity

The EELC is a public interest law clinic established in 2012. They are a team of 15 lawyers, researchers and community engagement officers working to advance the struggle for quality and equality in education, through legal research, advocacy and strategic litigation. The EELC works closely with, Equal Education, a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members.

 

 

 

Job Title: Executive Director
Location: Western Cape
Start date: 1 March 2020
Remuneration: Salary commensurate with experience.

The purpose of this position is to lead a team of activist lawyers advancing education justice join the organisation’s leadership team.

Responsibilities:

• They are looking for a leader with a demonstrated commitment and passion for social justice.
• Key responsibilities of the Executive Director include:
• Develop and implement the EELC’s strategic vision, including developing strategic and innovative legal interventions in line with the EELC’s core mandate.
• Manage and lead the EELC team, including supervising and mentoring attorneys and researchers.
• Lead and oversee the litigation and legal advocacy work of the EELC.
• Build and maintain relationships with strategic partners of the EELC including, social movements, community partners and funders.
• Represent the EELC in various forums, including engagements with the media, government, the private sector, civil society, and funding partners.
• Guide the development of the organisational culture and ethos of the EELC to reflect the values of justice and equity for which we advocate.

Requirements:

• An LLB degree. An LLM degree in a human rights / public law / education related field will be an advantage.
• Admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa with at least five to seven years’ post-admission working experience in litigation.
• Experience in, or familiarity with, education and/or children’s rights is a distinct advantage.
• A demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice.
• A track record of leadership abilities
•  The ability to build the internal capacity of the team and provide support in a collegial environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (fluency in other South African languages will be an advantage).
• Residing in or willing to relocate to Cape Town.

The Executive Director works together with the Deputy Director as part of a collaborative management team. Amongst others, the Deputy Director is responsible for the operational and administrative aspects of the EELC. Together with the Deputy Director, the ED is responsible for maintaining healthy financial management of the organisation, including fundraising and funder management.
