Vacancies South Africa

Established in 1998, SAMBT specialises in orientation and mobility (O&M) training for blind and partially sighted people. We focus on rural and township areas. We also run training programmes for children at schools for the blind. We do this throughout the country.SAMBT uses an outreach model. Here we deploy our O&M practitioners to a local area for a period of three months. They live in that local community and work intensively on a one-on-one basis with the blind trainees there.

As SAMBT works in under-privileged areas it does not charge individuals for training or for white canes and other assistive devices. Instead, its funding comes from donors, including the Gauteng Department of Health, several corporates, the National Lotteries Commission and various trusts and foundations. SAMBT also does advocacy work, the aim being to grow the number of O&M Practitioners in the field.SAMBT is a registered Trust. It is also registered as a Non-profit Organisation (NPO) with the Department of Social Development (007 – 220 NPO). SAMBT has Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) status.

The organisation is overseen by a Board of Trustees, currently comprising seven members with skills relevant to the running of the organisation. The trustees are representative in terms of race, gender and visual impairment. They employ five O&M Practitioners. A small team manages and administers the organisation.  In addition, we employ, on contract, a fundraiser and an expert monitoring and evaluation consultant.
