The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) based on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand is an independent foreign policy and development think tank advancing a well-governed, peaceful, economically sustainable and globally engaged Africa.

SAIIA seeks to make the following appointment:

Economist (ECN010/2020) (12-month contract with a possibility of renewal)

SAIIA is seeking to appoint an Economist for a new project on the macroeconomic impact of COVID-19 on low- and middle-income countries in Africa. The person would be responsible for undertaking macroeconomic research related to Covid-19’s impact on African economies. This includes collection of primary and secondary data, as well as macro-economic modelling, authoring related research briefs and policy papers, and presenting research findings at seminars.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Economist will:
    • Have extensive knowledge and experience in macroeconomic modelling and design of economic indices
    • Design modelling studies to quantify economic impacts
    • Collect primary and secondary data to conduct quantitative economic analyses
    • Recommend solutions to economic problems
    • Frequently scan the landscape and monitor best practice to keep abreast of latest macro-economic research and reports
    • Compile and present independent economic research reports
  • Essential experience, skills, qualifications:
    • A Master’s degree in Economics
    • A minimum of 3 -5 years’ experience in macro-economic modelling and index construction
    • Background in macroeconomic policy analysis would be an advantage
    • Ability to create positive relationships with project teams and other stakeholders across the organisation
    • Excellent communication and English writing skills
    • Good planning and organisational skills
    • Flexible approach to work, willingness to travel and willing to play a full role in ensuring the success of the team
