The Western Cape Street Children’s Forum (WCSCF) is an independent NPO that has been pivotal in the strategic development and success of helping street-affected children for over three decades.

As a collaborative network, the WCSCF works in partnership with a variety of organisations, civil society, NGOs and government departments to empower, integrate and coordinate an approach to assisting vulnerable children and children living, working and begging on the street.

 

Job Title: Forum Coordinator 
Job Location: Cape Town
Remuneration: R16 500 per month + 13th cheque

Purpose of the position is the care and protection of children, and to coordinate the Forum.

Responsibilities:

  • Administration:
  • Draw up Agendas and Minutes of all meetings
  • Manage budget, income and expenditure related to the role
  • Quarterly reporting on current trends relevant to street children sector
  • Maintain filing system for the WCSCF
  • Manage and maintain the network database (with assistance)
  • Attend to general correspondence and enquiries of the WCSCF
  • Networking and Membership Liaison and Development
  • Build and maintain relationships with existing members of the organisation
  • Arrange and participate in role players/stakeholders’ meetings
  • Maintain existing local child protection sub-forums
  • Assist in the establishment of regional alliances when necessary
  • Visit schools in hotspot areas and present on the reporting of abused and neglected children to principals and educators
  • Maintain and expand the WCSCF footprint with services to vulnerable children throughout the province, through the encouragement of continued collaboration within the sector and intersectorally.
  • Support and Mentorship to Unregistered Drop In Centres (DIC)
  • Provide support and mentorship based on the Norms and Standards Practice Guidelines for DICs in the Children’s Act to unregistered ‘drop in centres’ in the WC.
  • Sign a Mentorship Agreement with unregistered DIC’s
  • Provide relevant services and set up peer support mechanisms
  • Identify common training needs and develop training plans.
  • Facilitate the provision of training (logistics and planning)
  • Encourage DICs to register their organisation
  • Encourage DSD to register new Drop in Centres in order to qualify for funding
  • Advocacy, Networking and Liaison with Civil Society and Government
  • Promote sector and highlight the needs of street-affected children
  • Identify policies and implementation plans relevant to the sector
  • Advocate for the rights of vulnerable and street-affected children while understanding the challenges of getting and keeping children off the street, as well as the issues facing service delivery in the sector
  • Hold organisations and government accountable for their roles and mandates
  • Engage with sectors that impact the safety of children i.e. Tourism
  • Represent WCSCF on provincial and/or regional forums when necessary
  • Draft responses to government proposals related to the sector
  • Continue developing a positive approach towards street-affected children and be able to respond to negative and/or emotive or damaging media with professionalism
  • Fundraising
  • Develop the WCSCF’s funding base
  • Write and submit fundraising proposals to potential funders.

Requirements

  • BSW or BsocSci (HONS)
  • Valid Registration with the SACSSP
  •  Strong Administration skills
  • Proficient in MS Office, Email, Social Media, Mailchimp campaigns
  • Excellent public speaking skills (English medium)
  • Strong relationship building skills (networking)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • An excellent work ethic and professional conduct
  • A highly self-motivated, peoples-person who is passionate about care of children
  •  A reasonable knowledge of the Children’s Act will be favourable.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Valid driver’s license and own transport
