As a Instrumentation & Automation Engineer, you will be part of the Process Automation (PA) Division and Full Service & GC Business Unit.PA division delivers integrated solutions for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific application knowledge and services to help process industry customers worldwide meet their critical business needs in the areas of operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. These industries include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals, cement, minerals, marine and turbocharging.

 

Tasks:
As a Health & Safety officer you will be responsible to assist with advice and enforce all HSE issues related to the Full Service department. The duties of the safety officer will include but will not be limited to stop and correct any person who in his opinion works unsafely or poses a threat to any other person.Your tasks will include the following :
•Ensure that all appointments are done and the communication of the responsibilities to the appointee is explained.
•Ensure mandatory agreements are entered into between Contractors and ABB.
•Conduct safety inspections on site and report deviations to management.
•Ensure all employees are inducted prior to be permitted to work on site. The induction will inform all employees pertaining to the hazards prevalent on site, and training in the use of a safety harness and the use of a fire extinguisher will be communicated to all employees.
•Compile and maintain the site safety file and ensure all legislative documentation is communicated to employees on an on-going basis.
•Ensure no sub-contractor is permitted to work on site without being in possession of a safety file. Contractors must then be advised by the safety officer to compile the correct documentation based on their scope of work.
•Compile a risk assessment, safe working procedure and method statement from scratch and on an on-going basis identify and evaluate the risks to which employees may be exposed to, evaluate and analyze the risks identified and ensure that these risk assessments are then communicated to the work force.
•Compile a fall protection plan that is to be implemented on every project. As conditions differ on each site the safety officer must prepare the fall protection plan and ensure it is strictly implemented, amended and maintained as required. Further to this the safety officer will ensure that all employees are evaluated for their physical and psychological fitness to work at elevated heights.
•Take responsibility and prepare the site emergency evacuation plan and ensure all supervisors and contractors are supplied with a copy of the plan.
•Perform a high level of first aid treatment and evaluate injured persons if it is needed to send them for medical treatment at a hospital or clinic. Further to this the employer’s report of an accident must be completed and must accompany the injured employee to hospital. The original documentation must be sent to head office for settling the claims.
•Immediately report any incident or accident to the PA HSE advisor, Site manager and ABB Camden and be able to conduct a thorough accident and incident investigation and come up with remedial actions to prevent future occurrence. In the event of a reportable injury she/he must enter into correspondence with the Department of Labour to inform them of the accident.
•Compile monthly man hour and injury reports which are sent to the safety manager.
•Inspect the following high risk activities: Excavations, Scaffold, Formwork and Support work, All lifting machinery and lifting tackle, Portable electrical tools and immediately bring to management’s attention any serious deviations that may have being noted.
•Chair monthly safety meetings with safety reps and contractors and prepare minutes of meetings. Ensure that all deviations mentioned in the meeting are rectified and corrected.
•Act as the prosecutor in disciplinary hearings and prepare all documentation with regard to company disciplinary code of conduct and sent to head office. Discipline employees that disregard safety regulations on site.
•Conduct regular fire prevention and construction facilities inspections with findings documented and reported to management.
•Ensure all registers and checklists are updated on a weekly and monthly basis.
•Ensure all safety signs and notices are prominently displayed on site.
•Security – Ensure that only authorized persons enter the site by issuing each employee with an access card. Ensure no illegal immigrants are employed on the project by ensuring an id book is presented prior to preparing the access card. Compile a contract with the security company at the beginning of each contract which defines their responsibilities and contract obligations. Ensure no vehicle enters the site without a vehicle permit. All other vehicles to sign in and random searching to be carried out by the security company to prevent theft. Ensure the security guards on duty do not allow any goods to be removed off site without a valid gate pass.
•Maintain good housekeeping principles.
•Coordinate all training of employees on site and schedule all courses with the safety department,
•Ensure all health & safety reps conduct a monthly H&S rep inspection of their work areas.
•Ensure that all teams conduct a toolbox talk.
•Ensure that any person who is suspected to be under the influence of intoxicating substances is tested and the appropriate disciplinary action is taken against that employee if necessary.

Requirements:
Ideally, you will hold a related qualification as well as minimum 5 years experience in a similar role.
