Job Title: Activism Coordinator – Organizing
Job Location: Johannesburg

JOB PURPOSE: To develop and implement the Membership & Growth strategy; To recruit, retain and engage members to support AISA’s programme strategies; To develop AISA’s financial sustainability plans and strategies and implement activities to generate funds for AISA; To manage and coordinate activities of members, and to support and liaise with Amnesty International (AI) movement and outside networks to ensure maximum impact of AISA programmes and specific projects

AI SOUTH AFRICA PURPOSE: Amnesty International South Africa (AISA) is a national human rights entity that is part of a global human rights movement, established to address national human rights priorities as well as create the possibility for people in South Africa to join Amnesty International’s global human rights campaigns. Our mission in South Africa is to address pertinent national human rights issues through research and campaigning, and to empower South Africans to take action on issues that matter to them through AI’s international human rights movement; and to leverage South Africa’s influence regionally and globally to promote human rights domestically, bilaterally and internationally.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PURPOSE: We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal rights standards.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In collaboration with the Activism Coordinator – Mobilisation develop and implement programmes to grow activism and mobilisation across South Africa
  • In partnership with activists, create people powered campaign strategies, plans and activities to ensure strong and active local groups, campus networks, issue networks, youth networks and other activism mechanisms
  • Mentor, train and develop activist leaders to ensure their development as defenders of human rights
  • Provide advice and support for activists organising campaign activities and events
  • Provide advice and support to colleagues across Amnesty International South Africa in designing and implementing strategies and activities to engage activists
  • Mobilise action groups and supporters on campaigns through the development of and implementation of mass outreach activities in partnership with lead activists and the Activism Coordinator – Mobilisation.
  • Work with activists to build relationships with key external stakeholders to advance AISA’s goals including fundraising goals
  • Advise and support colleagues to develop, implement and evaluate strategies to strengthen the participation of activists across all AISA’s campaigns and activities
  • Produce and deliver communications as relevant to the role, using a range of channels and technologies
  • Perform the role to a high standard within agreed timelines, and in line with AI South Africa’s vision

Other tasks within your skills and competence as required and as requested by the Executive Director.

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE IN THIS JOB?

  • S/he would have developed and effectively implemented AISA’s Membership & Growth Strategy
  • Increased and retained AISA’s membership per agreed periodic targets
  • Effectively applied social media and innovative digital and technological tools to drive membership and engage membership to support AISA’s programmes’ campaigns,
  • S/he will have produced, implemented, monitored and evaluated related action plans to agreed deadlines with relevant members of their unit team(s); generated external awareness and activities on AISA’s programmes by mobilizing and supporting the membership, and expanded networks of influence in relation to key concerns and priority areas in the South African strategic plan; and written high quality materials for publication and other outputs
  • S/he will have contributed to the effective functioning of the team, and to the implementation of AISA’s mission, upholding AISA and AI’s values at all times

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Five to seven years of campaigning and public mobilization experience with a strong track record delivering successful national and Pan African campaigns within a campaigns, advocacy or communications environment
  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills with the ability to write persuasive material, especially for the web.  Familiarity with other languages of the AU desirable
  • Strong experience managing social media channels (principally Facebook and Twitter) for an African audience
  • Successful experience developing and managing digital campaign content and linking digital and traditional media strategies
  • Experience using Content Management Systems (especially Word press) to manage digital content
  • Proven ability to work effectively and sensitively to develop professional relationships with a wide range of NGOs, volunteers, specialists and other partners
    Strong project management and event organizing skills, with the ability to manage budgets and contractors
  • Familiarity with African policy making processes and politics, and an understanding of development issues affecting Africa is desirable
  • Commitment to AISA’s aims and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work and of how policy change can be achieved through effective advocacy
  • Ability to respond flexibly to opportunities and requests, sometimes with little notice
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment across various times zones
  • Ability to consistently apply good judgment and make good and responsible decisions

Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work at all times

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, International Relations or related field.

Honours or Masters’ Degree a definite advantage
