Job Title: Senior Project Manager Literacy

Department: Reading Support Programme
Reporting to: Chief of Party
Main Purpose of the Job
To assist the Project Chief of Party, in implementing the Reading Support Project
Main activities
- Develop detailed project plans and implementation tools
- Engage with stakeholders and monitor implementation
- Co-ordinate technical teams and partner organisation activities
- Review project performance against budget, work-plans and targets
- Develop standard operating procedures for the project
- Stay abreast of new developments in early literacy that can influence project design
- Report on project deliverables to the donor
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PHD in education – preferably with a focus on African Home Language and English literacy
- Management qualification
- Project Management qualification or substantial experience in project management
Experience
- Minimum 7 years’ project management experience working within the education field in South Africa
Technical competencies
- Literacy teaching proficiency
- Knowledge of the theoretical and practical aspects of project management as well as project management techniques and tools
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while working as part of a team
- Ability to plan, balance & cope with competing priorities
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, verbal and ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical colleagues
- Demonstrated skills and knowledge around education improvement projects
- Broad understanding of the Basic Education environment in South Africa
- Monitoring and Evaluation competencies
- Strong problem solving abilities
Leadership competencies
- Strong leadership, management and facilitation skills required as well as the ability to work within the South African Basic Education framework
- Provide direction and supervision to sub-ordinates and stakeholders
- Strong interpersonal skills and high levels of emotional intelligence
- Proven relationship management skills (public and private)
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a complex environment
