Nal’ibali (isiXhosa for “here’s the story”) is a national reading-for-enjoyment campaign. It seeks to spark and embed a culture of reading across South Africa, so that reading, writing, and sharing stories – in all South African languages – is part of everyday life.
Job Title: SPM Literacy Mentors [X 4]
Job Location:
- 1 x Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal
- 1 x Mdansane, Eastern Cape
- 1 x Mitchells Plain, Western Cape
- 1 x Soweto, Gauteng
This is a one year fixed term contract.
Responsibilities:
- Drive Nalibali Story Power in Motion vehicle in the listed communities and other identified spaces
- Arrange and attend stakeholder meetings
- Ongoing partner/stakeholder liaison
- Mobilise community involvement
- Promote brand awareness at provincial level
- Support and mentor volunteers
- Provide and distribute reading materials
- Identify training needs
- Facilitate training sessions
- Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting (ME and R)
Requirements:
- Minimum of two years’ community work experience
- Relevant tertiary qualification in education or social development advantageous
- Strong Written and verbal skills in English and one other relevant local language (IsiZulu / IsiXhosa / Sesotho)
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office plus Excel)
- A Proven interest and enthusiasm for literacy development and/or education
- Driver’s license essential
- Passion and energy to improve children’s lives
- Independent, self-starting person who can identify and seize opportunities
- Passion for literacy, education and children’s rights
- Enthusiasm for driving change
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to ride a bicycle
- Respected in the community / not popular for the wrong reasons
- Be an independent, self-starting person who can spark excitement, raise awareness, reach new audiences
- Build partnerships and support ongoing activities to promote reading for enjoyment, in spaces such as schools, preschools, clinics and public spaces
- Eastern Cape: strong written and verbal skills in (IsiXhosa / English)
- Western cape: strong written and verbal skills in (IsiXhosa / English)
- Kwa Zulu-Natal strong written and verbal skills in (IsiZulu / English
- Gauteng: strong written and verbal skills in (Sesotho / English)
